but in the eyes of the military, that does not make them an actual Army Ranger.

The frick it doesn't. Yes, regiment guys make fun of "tabbed" rangers, but they're rangers nonetheless.

This is all, 100% horseshite.

He may not have served in the regiment, but he’s a tabbed ranger, served as a PL in combat in 2006 (!!!) in an infantry unit amongst other things.

I think people are really underestimating how fricking difficult Ranger school is, and also underestimating his service as a PL during one of the shittiest times in the Middle East in an infantry platoon. I also like how the article says anyone is eligible for Ranger school. My current BN is an AG BN. Sure they’re all “eligible” but half of them can’t even pass a damn PT test.

Bottom line - he's technically wrong, but this isn't stolen valor. Not even close.
And that article says that "ANYONE" can go to Ranger School. Well guess what? Regiment has cooks, motor t, admin, logistics, etc. as well. A tan beret doesn't mean high speed operator.
And Ranger School attrition is right in line with RASP 1 (roughly 33% graduate).

This seems kind of like getting a JD and passing the bar, then going straight into politics and call yourself a lawyer.

Stop the vicious rhetoric on this man...he served his country and should be revered for that, as should all veterans.
I was a member of the 101st Airborne during the Vietnam War Era. I did not step one foot in Vietnam but I was Army during the era and I was not a paratrooper. I also, volunteered for and graduated from Jungle Warfare School in Panama, Canal Zone making me eligible to call myself, and wear the patch of a Jungle Expert.
My point is if I listed all the above to someone and they wanted to split hairs and find something negative to say they could twist my claims into a conclusion that the writer is suggesting about stolen valor.
There is no stolen valor here...Cotten stated his accomplishments and should be proud of them all.
