The weirdest thing about India is public spaces are so often totally disgusting, but they keep their houses clean enough that you can eat off the floor. I don’t get it.

I spent about twenty days traveling across India with my husband and our Indian friend — the whole trip was a gift from him, completely covered: airfare, accommodations, food, everything.
It was wild, unforgettable, and I’m genuinely glad we got to have the experience. But I’ll be honest: unless you’re going for business, I wouldn’t recommend it. It’s a lot, and not in a way most casual travelers are prepared for.
The population in the city of Delhi is almost the same as the state of California. The pollution is atrocious. We went to the mountains, and you couldn't see anything, because of the smog. Our friend said "It's fog". "Ummm, it never burns off".

How are there so many people in India? How? It’s not THAT big of a country, the farmland can’t be that productive. How are so many people supported there?

Visited India on business followed by some touring in early 1980's and again in 2010. It was obvious on that later trip that the population explosion had swamped infrastructure and public services. The rural custom of using nature as a personal shitter wasn't changed as that population flooded the cities.You have to pay to use a clean toilet.
Public campaigns for improvement come and go with little effect. The great Gandhi who spent 3 years in London as a law student is quoted as saying "sanitation is more important than independence." They only got the "independence" part.
