Summers should be awesome.

The wife and kids will be following me next summer. They will get a taste of the awesomeness during Mardi Gras though.
My daughter might make the 33 hour drive with me in order to keep me awake and then fly home.

You certainly won’t be around too many people who annoy you.

Congrats. Sounds like fun. Don't envy the amount of snow you'll likely witness though.

I'm not in the socialist utopia of Baton Rouge, but Atlanta area and am a bit jealous. I wouldn't mind moving to a more civilized place myself. I see the writing on the wall and it's not good. Cities are devolving into 3rd world cesspools where crime goes unchecked due to virtue signalers not wanting to impress their values on the criminals. So if we're to just up and accept this sort of thing, where do the people who appreciate civility and law and order go?
I think you probably picked the Mecca of civility.

People: the people are nice, but the culture is way different from Louisiana. The people in La are generally fun loving, joke around, and focus around eating and drinking. Folks from there are a little more serious and more to themselves. It’s different but not necessarily bad. Salt of the earth type folks. Gathering is more focused around outdoor activities. I kind of felt like it was going back in time 20 or 30 years.
As for churches, North Idaho is a popular area for freedom loving, Christian, survivalist types, so there is a healthy church culture there. I feel like there are more true believers that attend than the “go to church because that’s what I’m supposed to do” crowd you see sometimes in the south. I don’t think it’ll be the first thing someone asks you, but it may come up from time to time. If you are a churchgoer, we have several friends that go to real life ministries, probably the most active in the valley.
The nicest town in the valley is Wallace. Quaint, historic and quirky with some neat shops. Touristy in the summer and has a couple pretty good breweries. It’s up valley so gets more snow. Kellogg has some potential, but needs some money infused. Pinehurst is ok with pockets of nice and dumpy. Smelterville and Osburn are pretty dumpy. Mullan is also dumpy but I think there is some long term potential there since lookout ski area will be expanded in the future.
We didn’t have kids when we moved there, but had friends with school aged kids. I think there a few different elementary schools but Kellogg is the only high school. Its not great, but probably not horrendous. There’s a pretty active homeschool community in the area as there aren’t really any other options. I have heard good things about Canyon Elementary if your kids are that age.
For fishing there’s not really a salmon run since the dam at post falls prevents migration through the lake and upriver. We did catch some rainbows and cutthroat in the north fork. The south fork doesn’t hold fish because of the contamination. The upper st joe is supposed to be really good. The chain lakes nearby are supposed to be good for bass and other freshwater species.
Elk hunting is pretty good but there is a lot of pressure because of the proximity to cda and Spokane. If you get access from someone in the bottoms that helps a bunch. My neighbor killed a 300+ bull walking distance from the house.
The wildlife is super cool too. You’ll see elk, deer, moose, bear, etc. I even got to see a juvenile mountain lion from about 30 yards walking in to hunt one afternoon.

Thanks for the thoughtful response. Is there a sports bar in the area that you recommend? Or an LSU alumni group in Coeur?
What is your opinion on Cataldo?

Is this place randomly the Siberia of America? Because otherwise, I'm pretty sure most people understand it gets cold as shite in the mountainous northern part of the Western US.

That area has a lot of microclimates, Couer averages less than 50" of snow a year, which is pretty light considering the latitude. But like here, it varies because of topography.

I’ve been to Coeur D’Alane a couple times and enjoyed it. Beautiful country up there. You won’t regret moving there.

Which town will you be working in?
There was a little sports bar called best shots, but looks like it’s closed up based on google. City limits brewery in Wallace or hill street depot in Kellogg will be your best bet to watch games. And maybe at the bar at the base of the gondola in winter.
Cataldo / Rose Lake is pretty nice. The valley opens up and there is more land. Not really a town, more like a zip code. More of a farm and ag feel than the mining towns up valley. We had horses so it pretty much ruled the other towns out because of land availability. It’s Out of the hustle bustle of cda because of the pass but still only 20-30 minutes from anything in town. Nice folks around there.
There’s some nice places going down hwy 3 also, but it would be a rough drive in the winter.
It’s amazing what the influx of folks has done to the real estate up there. What was affordable when we bought in 2014 would probably be out of reach for us nowadays.
