I have a 2006 Tacoma. I can't decide if I want to sell it or keep it forever. I got it for a great deal on Ebay years ago. V6, extended cab prerunner. If I keep it I need to repaint it. I didn't keep up the paint well. I have never done any major work to it. Other than oil and fluid/filter changes and the U-joints/leaf spring gaskets. I am about to have the rear rebuilt as it whines and the LSD isn't working. I put upgraded crossdrilled and slotted rotors with larger four piston calipers.
They are great trucks. I would buy another over 100k mile Tacoma/4runner/fj in a heartbeat.

I have never had any vehicle this reliable. I put 95k on the 90 I bought it with and it's been near perfect. My friends with more expensive Chevys and Fords have put in transmissions, changed out AC systems, major head work, all before 125k. Now I have a ford with 300k so I'm not shooting them down. Just saying that I doubt there is any vehicle out there with a ladder frame plus chassis that is as cheap to operate per mile as the Tacoma.

It is rock solid. Just get used to the odd engine sound. It's Aluminum.

A friend of mine who works for Toyota says I could get $7k on a trade in with mine. I think that's insane, seeing that I paid $9k for it seven years ago.

damn, I guess I should cash out. lol.

I'm one year newer, (less desirable color though) and have a camper top. I'd be happy with $6k.
Though I'm afraid to sell because anything else would give you problems. My wife has an Expedition and always something is breaking. Other cars I had, always something breaking. The Tacoma just works every day. Easy to maintain. I also rub the frame with an oily rag after every oil change because I've hear of rust issues, and so far have none. My truck came from the Pacific Northwest and Colorado.

Red flags?

A big "red flag" with the 4Runner is the likelihood of a carjacking.

For some reason, they're high on list for grand theft larceny.

Channon Christian and her boyfriend were carjacked in her 4Runner, kidnapped, experienced "mobbing" torture variously, and then were murdered.  The final insults were the boyfriend was set on fire and she was scrubbed with bleach (to remove DNA) and stuffed in a household trash can.

That all for a 4Runner.

I still have a 97 Ext cab 4WD 0ver 200K but A/C crapped out. I trust it to drive anywhere though. We use it for local trips and 4WD in and out of the woods.

4runner over Tacoma. 3rd gen with the 3.4 is the best design.

Mileage limit...meh, doesn't matter as long as it is in good shape.

Look for leaks at rear main and valve covers.

Look to see when timing belt and water pump was changed.

If you see new spark plug wires, look for new coils on the opposite side.

Floor it from a dead stop and make sure it accelerates cleanly to redline without a rattle. Rattle means cats are done.

Check radiator tops for cracks. The plastic fiber tops develop hairline cracks and leaks.

Climb under it and Check out the fuel filter mount, it likes to rust off.

Rear suspension Will nearly always be collapsed.

Check the ignition switch, a lot of the time the split tumblers wear and require replacement. You can remove the splits and toss them. Keep the others. At that point a lot of Toyota keys will start the vehicle...so be it.

O2 sensors are nearly always toast on Toyotas.

After purchase, flush coolant system with distilled water repeatedly and switch to green coolant.

Drain and fill transmission 5x with valvoline dex/merc full syn. It Will get it near 100% purity.

I know you don't want to hear this, but the 1st gen xterra is a vastly superior unit. Better mechanically. Easier to lift. Better 4x4 design. Weaker in that it will rattle like an old truck.

If you do go with the yota, I think I have a new set of coils for it that I'll sell you for a six pack

Wheelers offroad is the cheapest place to buy a lift for a 3rd gen

You can find a good 96-02 4runner for less than $10k, but it most likely will not be around here. I found some in AZ not that long ago for $9k with about 150k, that were well maintained.

If you don’t mind a bigger vehicle, the ‘07 and older Sequoias have the same reliability, with a cheaper price tag.

Had an 03 Taco. Best vehicle I ever owned and got totaled. I’d still own it today otherwise. You can find some used around, but the miles will be insane. Good luck finding one with less than 200K miles.

I recently acquired a 2006 Tundra Dbl Cab Limited 4.7 V8 with 70K miles. Had to ditch the JBL CD/Cassette tape stereo for a modern audio system.
