The OT is the expert on all things 4runner and Tacoma.

I would like to pay around $10k for a used 4runner or Tacoma. As of now I am leaning towards 3rd gen (96-02) 4runner with 4wd and V6 or a Tacoma 1st gen (pre 2005).

Any tips or recs?

4runner vs Tacoma?

Mileage limit (100k, 150k, 200k, etc)?

Auto vs manual?

Trim?

Red flags?

Thanks for any advice.

Look for rusted out frames on the Tacomas. Pretty sure 1st and 2nd gen has the issues.

You will not find one without 180,000 to 225,000 for less than $10,000 that hasn’t been wrecked or has issues.

Haven't looked in a few years, but any Tacoma being sold for $10k is most definitely going to have over 200k miles.

As much as I loved Toyota, especially the Tacomas, I would never buy a vehicle with that many miles on it.

Certain generation Tacomas and 4 Runners required the timing belt be replaced at 60K or 90K mile intervals depending on the model, if it fails your engine is toast. Try to get verification this was done if you are buying one of the affected models.

I have a 2000 Tacoma Prerunner extended cab. 195,000 Miles. It's the "big" 4 cylinder version. Excellent condition. I'll make you a deal and let her go for $9,500.

Tacoma are the most overvalued used vehicle on the planet. These people seem to think thier 2002 Tacoma with 200k miles is worth $12000

I’ve got an ‘08 Taco, 160K Miles, frame was inspected by the Toyo recall with no rust.

4X4. Manual transmission. I’m the original owner. No wrecks.

These trucks are out there. They made so many.

People like me just dont want to give them up.

Not all of them rusted out. There were a lot. He asked what to look for, so I gave him an issue known.

I bought new Tacoma in 2016. I love mine.

Ignore the haters, a properly maintained Toyota is a 500k mile vehicle all day.

Problem is, you won’t find a well maintained one for under 10k unless it’s an ignorant owner.

I have a 04 LC with the 4.7 V8, 225k miles and it runs like a top.
