Looking for a good road bicycle...

I want good bike to ride long distances. Entry level road bike. Want something fast and light. Where’s the best place to look? Bicycle Shop? Capitol Cyclery? Any ideas? TIA.

I'd say cycle shop to get an idea what's out there and for what cost to get into it. Then maybe look for a good used one on Craig's List or some other on-line outlet to save a few bucks.
You'd be surprised how many folks buy really good bikes, ride them for a few months or years and tire of it and they are just collecting dust.

Local bike shops are a great resource. I love my specialized tarmac E-tap build. It’s overkill for a mediocre rider like me, but I enjoy it. Make sure to get a good frame, carbon if you can swing it. And update components as you go.
ETA: almost as important as the bike is a good fit. Either go to a shop that will fit you or find a fitter. I’ve become pretty good friends with mine as much as I see him lately.

You can usually find all sorts of bikes on Craigslist. Agree on the carbon frame if you can spend a little more. I’d probably start at a shop though if you aren’t sure exactly what you want. I think my Trek carbon hybrid was between $5-600. Sounds pricey, but I’ve put thousands of miles on it over the past few years

Pro tip- shop last years models. Usually very little changes year to year. I just scored a 2019 salsa spearfish for 2k off the original price.

My only advice is don't be afraid to spend some money. A good bike is an investment and will last forever, if you're good to it. If there's a bike you see that's on the pricier side, I'd say pull the trigger.

Specialized Robaix. Perfect for these crappy roads. I've had mine for 10 years and it's still in great shape

Try Facebook marketplace. Got a barely used Trek Tri Bike for 300 bucks a couple weeks ago

I wasn’t suggesting he look at something like that but a big reason I like it is the frame. I would highly recommend the tarmac frame if it’s a good fit.

Look for a Trek or Specialized with Shimano 105 components. What you want to do on the bike would determine the actual model you want to buy. Do you want to go fast or ride long distances comfortably? Also, no need to go carbon frame on your first bike, go aluminum and invest the savings for some gear or upgraded wheelset down the road.

For the record if you are actually serious it’s an addiction.. a healthy one for sure.. but an addiction. Ignore the “spandex jokes” and hate from the fatties in cars. Cycling is amazing and it (and my dog) saved me when I got back from Iraq. If you choose to “clip in” find some protected roads or paths near you wherever you live so you can get used to clipping in and out. If you do standard pedals also be cautious at first.
Welcome to the club. Your core strength is about to be awesome and you will burn calories like you won’t believe. Just be aware of your surroundings at all times and enjoy that feeling. Get the right bike and it’s like a goddamn racecar.

I would say go to a bike shop. Just because you find a good bike on craigslist doesn't mean it's a good fit. I also like to support local bike shops as much as possible.

Yes, it gets to be an addiction fast. But damn I love scarfing down an extra burger or brat at meal time and still dropping weight.

I started with a Specialized Allez Sport last year and have already upgraded to a Trek Domane this year. The ride quality of the 2020 Domane is fantastic. If it’s in your budget I would highly recommend the Trek. If not the Specialized is a great starting point.

The road is for motorized vehicles, keep your peddle bike off of it.
