I will not be surprised if this gains traction across the country.

Property tax rates in Nashville, Tenn., will be increasing by 34 percent in what Mayor John Cooper described as a “painful but necessary” move that will raise money for the city, which has taken a hit during the pandemic

I wonder what the impact is going to be on such a hot real estate market like Nashville? Does this mean that they’re no longer going to be a hot market?

Raise taxes while people fight to keep themselves and their businesses afloat.

Don't worry. They'll lower the tax rates when the crisis is over.
Like they always do.
Like they always do.

Aren’t the bars on broadway currently placing lawsuits against the city for forcing them to close?

If you think that's bad wait until you read Biden's tax plan

Hoo boy, and wait 'til they figure out they have to somehow make up for all of the lost federal taxes collected in 2020.

So is this like going up from 3% to 4% or going from 1% to 35%?

It’s just a temporary tax measure. You can always vote to not renew it

I’d imagine the 3-4% scenario. But even then in a $600,000 house that’s another $500/month and getting absolutely nothing in return for it.

If people aren't convinced yet of gov't ineptitude and how much power they yield today then we're lost.
Gov't: you can't work
Also Gov't: pay us more of the money you earn from working

It's not ineptitude, it's numbers. The majority of people that live within the actual Nashville city limits, not the metro, probably rent, just like every other major urban center. So you raise property taxes, knowing the majority of your voters won't be impacted directly, at least on paper.
Then rent prices go up and the renters blame it on the evil capitalist pigdog landlords, all the while barking and clapping like seals at the local government raising taxes on "the rich".

I believe this had been in the works since before Covid-19. Bad timing I guess, but to pin the blame on Covid seems misguided if that is the case.
