I'm a boomer and this is my memory, too.

If you don't like public batting cages, build one in your backyard.

If you have a friend with an expensive bat, make sure they are your friend. They may replace/upgrade the bat next year. For $50, it could be yours next season.

Talk to your kid about what he sees on the field. Ask him his thoughts on sportsmanship after the game (both the parents' and the kids' behavior). The best ways to learn life lessons are seeing and doing. He most likely knows what acting like a douche is. Talking about the behavior right after the events will most likely make sure he isn't ever tempted to go there in the heat of the moment. And knowing your son is paying attention will help you keep a level head when a volunteer/underpaid ump makes a mistake.

Imagine a post this level-headed, well thought out and full of sound advice getting as many downvotes as upvotes. If that doesn't tell you all you need to know about the OT then I can't help you.

Every kid at the cages has bags full of bats, that cheesy baseball hair, wearing chains, and have Kenny Powers glasses on. They all seem to be a bunch of punks. The worst part is 90% of the dads are dressed the same. It’s almost turned into a cult and half of them can’t hit their weight.

i didn't play baseball as a kid (basketball and football were enough for me, spring was fishing time) but started noticing this in high school. baseball culture is weird and a bit gay from the outside.

Baseball used to be for the cooler kids and we loved the game. Now it seems they just like to cosplay like baseball players.

So you thought what you were doing was cool when you were a kid and now you think what kids are doing is dumb.

You got old my man.

It doesn’t at all, I just think they’re idiots for their shortsighted opinions

I’ll say this… the one thing that does get under my skin is the whole ‘travel ball names’ meme… it just sucks.. I’ve never coached a Braxtyn, Jaxtynn, Colt, Brayydynn, etc… yes, some names are more common than others with this generation, but you could go into any classroom in the country and see the same shite. It’s not a travel ball thing

I grew up a few minutes from East Cobb Baseball. I quit in Middle School because basketball and football were more my speed, but still had a ton of friends in ECB.

The douches who tried strutting around like they were future pro players getting ready for the Show were always the worst guys on their teams. They always had the hair, the neon colors, chains, and probably all clocked in at 1.5 GPAs.

The guys who ended up making it to college or that got drafted straight from high school were the quiet guys. They showed up, put their head down, and got to business. Never would have known they played baseball unless you were friends with them or went to the school games in the Spring.

Baseball's travel ball culture is absolute gutter filth. I'm planning on putting DirtyDawg Jr into baseball, but he's going to get his arse whooped if he ever becomes the future version of all the deadbeat baseball bros I grew up with.

WHat's happened to Little League Baseball?

I'll try to tell you --- from a coach's perspective.

Tournament ball has really hurt the overall level of play and talent pool of the rec leagues. It depends on what level your kid is at, to what your perspective is. Is that a good thing, or a bad thing?

THere are parents of mediocre players who put their boys into tournament ball because they know these things -

#1 IF they stay in rec they'll get 12-13 games, 2 practices per week and who knows what level of coaching their son will get. Might get a rookie volunteer.

#2 Their son might play 40 games in tournament ball and will definately develop more by being with more talented coaches and players. Even if they're on a bad tournament team.

Now, if your kid is a mediocre player and you're in a rec league, your kid might get a chance to pitch, play infield, etc... because most of the A and B players are playing on weekends.

Having said that, in my opnion, there are way too many teams and way too many kids playing tournament ball. I've seen this with my own eyes.

And I'm a coach.

I loved the rec leagues, but it's not even descent baseball anymore. There aren't enough solid players to make the level of play competitive. It's hard to watch. Its hard to coach. It's harder and harder to put together a good team.

But, for the more talented kids - tournament ball is 100% the way to go.

If you don't think so, wait until you see how refined the boys are at Freshman tryouts. You son stands almost zero chance of making the HS team without higher level competition and coaching.

I've got 7 or 8 boys playing tournament ball and I love to go watch them play. They're in the right spots based on their talent level and love of the game.

And at times, their parents will call me and we'll discuss their plans, goals, and how to move forward in the game....

So, it depends on your sons love of the game and his talent level.

in high school, our football and basketball team were pretty good. football was count hair from making it to the dome and the basketball team was probably the best or second best in the district. the baseball team was trash... guess which team had the most obnoxious and cocky kids?

I grew up in the very rural Deep South and played baseball my whole life. I played high school baseball in the mid 2000s.

We didn't have neon hair, chains, Pit Viper sunglasses, etc. The team was also diverse (for our area). I don't even think Pit Vipers existed then. All this is to say I think some of the cringeworthy antics are attributable to the era rather than the game.

The AA level of select ball is glorified rec. I see little difference in quality of play.

baseball has been a little cult for a long time. They spend so much time with each other with so much downtime. So it is just a bunch of pre-teens creating their own doucher sub-culture. Especially since it is the only sport a lot of these guys play. College coaches use to reel them in for good reason, see Tennesse baseball.

No sport is immune to it. From the looks of it, year round 7 on 7 football is creating a similar brand of douche bag.

TLDR - the stereotypes about travel ball can be accurate, but for the most part, it’s blown way way out of proportion here

It's also not the kids fault their parents gave them shitty names. That's just endemic now...there are plenty of Jaxxtons and Bryleighs out there playing Magic: The Gathering, clarinet or in FFA.

Yup.

Travel ball has changed youth baseball over the last 10 years. And not for good.

The amount of kids who have a mom and dad that pushed them into 6/7/8 year old coach pitch travel ball, who revolt against the parents by age 9, is insane.

But hey, mom gets a cool pic of the kids in their matching practice jerseys and bat bags...
