Like what is up with people, like saying “like” constantly in like every sentence.

I remember my daughter saying “like” a million times a day in High School . Now I’m hearing college football players doing the same thing. Once I become aware of it, I can’t pay attention to anything else they are saying!

Like, a million people are now gonna, like, come in and say "like", like, a bajillion times to, you know, like, be funny.

I can’t stand “impact”. I don’t know how that became a social norm.

It has been going on since the 1980s. I think less of people who do it.

Or people saying"right" after every sentence.

Its a "placeholder" because they do not know what else to say. I use to say "umm" a lot as a kid, and my dad broke me of that. Would stop me every time I'd say it, and tell me to just take a brief pause instead of saying "umm"

It's a symptom of poor public speaking. It is a pause for the brain to form the next sentence somewhat like we used to say umm or other verbal pauses

With any other speech pattern that is observed by people it becomes part of one’s own speech overtime
Social media and the Internet has made people more connected, young people who are impressionable have more access to people using “like” and generally sounding dumb. Therefore just via consumption the speech is adopted as their own
Really no different from kids who’s parents use profanity excessively for no reason, so in turn they do for no reason
Realize this is longer and more logically thought out explanation than you wanted with your original post
Anyways 3.50

So teenagers and people barely out of high school who aren’t there “to play school”

I blame Square Pegs and Valley Girl.

I remember valley talk in the 1980’s used “like” a lot. Also Alicia Silverstone talked like that in Clueless. I’ll give her a pass though for being cute!

like, literally, and low-key (kids use this shite constantly nowadays) = low IQ

More than 20 years ago, I broke my two teen daughters of saying "like" a million times by repeating it back to them.
"So you like, want to like use my like truck to like go shopping for like prom dresses?"
In less than a week, they stopped.

Literally is the word that is being obnoxiously overused now. Gen Zers say it entirely too much.

I think it’s really “Bro” now.

My verbal filler word when I’m public speaking is “basically” and I have no idea why. I try to catch myself from saying that.

This is primarily a liberal thing.
