Let's examine what OP said.

"Walking through the courthouse on criminal court days knowing . . . I'll be walking out again, and some of these poor bastards won't."

It's clear he is grateful some of the "poor bastards" won't be walking out of court.

In my younger days. I had to take extra money with me when I had business there. I wouldn't go into a Dallas County courthouse with less than $500 in cash. I never needed it, but was being safe, instead of sorry.
