Nothing better than cracking open and getting the fresh smell of that year's new Rand McNally atlas and seeing what roads had changed. We took a cross country road trip every summer and I would trace our route in the atlas as went went along. I was special.
My insurance agent at State Farm recently gave me a Rand McNally atlas and I told him “well if these drones attack our power grid at least I’ll be prepared now”

When In school, do book reports using Encyclopedia Britanica Books at home or go to the library to check out books and do research.
Head to the corner store to use the pay phone hung on the outside of the building to call people if my mom or one of my sisters was on the phone talking endlessly. Oh, and no more of those damn "Party Lines" that shared phone service with other people and often picking up your phone you could listen to their conversation.
Look in a cookbook for recipes and hope the one you're looking for is in the book/books you have on hand-------if not, improvise and hope for the best.

Trusting "The News" because it was the only information you had. The CIA had it made back then.

Had magazines and newspapers to shite with. My parents had a stack of magazines on the back of the toilet and a basket full of magazines next to the toilet.
And breakfast before walking to school looked like this

I use to have to call a 1-800 number to get up to date scores during football season.

If I wasn't in school and it wasn't dark or the weather wasn't bad I was outside. Starting around.. I guess 11 or 12, during the summers and holidays, with all the other kids in my neighborhood and near by neighborhoods, there was always something going on. Half of us were latch key kids. There were woods close to use, we would go there, that's where the nudie mags were hidden. Under a big branch in a garbage bag. There was a small ditch everyone called piss pond because everyone pissed in it. We were close to the park that had baseball fields.
My grandparents lived "down the bayou" and there was always something to do down there. I had cousins close to my age and there were people who lived around that I went to school with so there was always people to be around. There were woods in the back and a bayou in the front. If you cant find anything to do with woods and a bayou then.. you are a lost cause.
My dad's hobby was a "wood worker". When a kid in the family was born, the year the kid turned two he would build them a rocking horse. I would go in the shop with him and watch him build. It took him a good 7 months.. He would work on it after work and on weekends, but a few people he made them for still had them to give to their kids so there was that.
Sometimes I wish there was no internet. I feel like the internet is too easy to waste a lot of time on where as, without it, I was more creative. There were less distractions. When I was in my mid teens I actually took a liking to DJing and used to DJ school dances, middle school dance parties. After I did one middle school dance party I was getting calls all the time so I stopped and sold my mixer to a friend's dad, but I realized it wasn't DJing for parties that I actually liked, It was creating music with music. Finding two songs that I could use to create a separate beat or something like that. But the internet, smartphones and tables have made things too easy.

Weather and navigation are two big uses of the smartphone for me. Life was better without the Internet.

When I was a kid, that’s what these were for…
I think I was about 10 or 11 when I finished the set.

Mapquest during that brief period of time with the benefits of the internet, but no smart phone.
Always a chore to get the map and directions to print out just right.

Morning sports pages didn’t have a lot of the late ending ballgames from the night before. I subscribed to the Nashville banner (afternoon paper) to see scores.
Thinking of this reminded me of my time in the Navy. Trying to keep up with March Madness while my ship was in the Indian Ocean. I worked on the flight deck and befriended a C-2 pilot. I paid her $10 to buy me a USA Today Newspaper on her next flight. After I read it, I sold it on the ship for $7.

I bought my Dad a magazine rack for the bathroom that holds two rolls of toilet paper.
