But you don’t have to do that anymore (maybe not the car keys part), right?
That’s what the OP is asking. What things have cell phones and computers made unnecessary.
Cash is legal tender, you never know when you might need some cash instead of a useless plastic card.
Music has the same problem as digital money. If they can decide you can't use it, was it ever really yours?

First sales job they gave me a pager that only beeped and a roll of quarters to call the office from a payphone for messages. When I got my fist pager that displayed 32 characters I thought it was incredible.
I used to have a key map for Houston. Nothing more disappointing than going to an address like something on Reading Rd and then looking again and realizing you need to be on Reading Ct which is on other side of town!

Life was much more simple and peaceful.

If your car broke down, walk to the nearest house and hope you didn't get shot.
I remember passing by certain houses because of mean dogs knowing I'd have to walk another mile or so.
It was an adventure back then. I got suck in mud one time and started walking. Got picked up by a guy in a semi hauling logs. He took me to his house to use his phone and only upon arrival at his place realized he was the guy that threw the most awesome new years party I'd ever been too. This hank Williams Jr looking dude shot a tree down with a cannon that night.
You'd think I'd have learned my lesson but I got my truck stuck at least once a year and had to walk to use a phone.

Not before cell phones but before smart phones. Signed up for text updates for CFB through cbs sports.
They would all come in the same time during the 3rd Quarter in DV. Fun times.
Still don’t have service for half the game.

I’m sure this has been mentioned but I have really distinct memories of how important the daily newspaper was to everyday life.

I still buy our local small town newspaper just for the feel and the smell.

Read the want ads. Always looked at cars for sale. And always read the obituary, marriage licenses (to see if an ex girlfriend got married) and divorces.

Stopping at a gas station/rest stop to get a map when crossing into a new state or a city you’ve never been in was a joy.
But the simple fact is people don’t look and talk anymore and it’s awful. Any public space is just people staring down at their phones.
It is so truly tragic.

This sounds exactly like my childhood. Minus swim team.
Neighborhood football games were a big thing for us. Tackle, no pads. We kicked the shite out of eachother. Good times.

The 3 daves on JPP were a godsend
Much better than listening to joe tessitore. Of course with the pixels we had no idea what was happening with out them

Same for rental car and airline reservations having to contact a person directly.
I still do this. I admit I don't do much traveling but I make contact over the phone and often time I get a better rate than what the online prices are.

Before computers, drop and add meant going to different classrooms and collecting class cards for the classes and times that you wanted. It could take a while, depending on how many classes you needed to change.
But, it was also kind of fun to trade, deal, and generally play the game.
