re: Lets talk about Death or dying.

I hope it’s a long way off. Sucks to see my parents getting into the age range where every year is a coin flip.

I believe in God and Heaven and all that. People say “well, what if Heaven’s not real?” And my response is “what if it is?” I’d rather be a good person and there be nothing after than be a bad person and risk eternal damnation.

Generally not afraid of dying, but not gonna lie, when I take a minute to think about the finality of death, it’s frickin terrifying

I had a friend who killed himself last week, and listening to his 7 year old son cry at the funeral absolutely crushed me.

Yup but then you realize how insignificant you are in the scheme of things and that life was just a show. You’re more familiar with not existing from the eons before you were born.

The fricked up thing is that this gives me comfort. Bad day? frick it when you process this. Nothing matters, no matter how successful you are, we’ll all end up in the ground. We know nothing…just as unaware as your dog or cat…because we’re not important. But pretending we are and forcing it through religion gives us a sense of comfort.

Thoughts on this ...

Been through multiple tornadoes at the same time, more up close and personal, than not.

Several years ago maybe late Spring to early Summer I was sleeping in my bed. Was dreaming of the biggest, blackest, most powerful tornado I had ever experienced. It came directly overhead and sucked me up right in the middle. Very slow, total quiet, and very gentle as I rose in the vortex. I was not scared and totally calm and at peace. Then I stopped rising and began to descend. Same slow, calm, gentle, and total quiet in the exact reverse of my initial ascension. I opened my eyes to one of my youngest hound rescues doing what looked like canine CPR on my chest with his front paws.

Was it a VERY vivd dream
Was it an out of body experience and I had passed for an instant


Some thoughts and observations since
a) While I never feared tornados before, I now respect the wake up call they may represent when they hit your community.

b) Since then, that particular hound, tho hardheaded as hell on any other issue, sleeps tightly to me at night since. If not, he howls till he gets his spot (tho sometime with such pressure he wake me in the middle of the night.

c) While we live in the major spaces of our lives (say birth, marriage, death) perhaps our real lives are how we live in the space between these spaces that seem so ordinary and easily forgotten.

d) While we are islands unto ourselves and most likely die alone at the end, place great energy and value on the times we gather in community are express love in the whole, not the individual.

We all have had friends and loved ones who died. I always accepted it as being inevitable. I recently learned that a dear college friend succumbed to cancer at 69 years-old. This was the first time a female friend in my age group has died. For some reason this has really gotten to me.

Scared for sure…not on the fast pass to Heaven with my standards

If our God is merciful, and I think he is…maybe he’d let me hang around purgatory a while.

Man, life is pretty simple I think…don’t be an jerk and love all those you come in contact with (at least as much as you can until they become an a-hole)

Be good fellas, smile…shout GTHOM often. Hug your mom, dad & your kids. That’s kinda it
