I think you have to keep in mind that it was illegal to get a divorce before 1969.
Humans are the only animals (maybe dolphins as well) to have sex for pleasure. Humans behavior changes as laws change, as for as physically, I think we see two different sides of the spectrum. I think there will be less average sized. People will either be in tip top physical condition, bigger and stronger and then on the other side, fatter and lazier.

Because my experience in life is that most guys are taller than 5’9. But living in wealthy suburbs my entire life may skew my perception.

I would say most of my friends, all who grew up in the wealthy suburbs, are under 6'...... But maybe I subconsciously hoose friends shorter than me. The tallest friend I have is from England and is 6'-6".
