It is good to see projects like this being promoted. Let's hope it realizes its full potential.
But BR has seen projects like this before. They are announced with great fanfare, but at the end of the day the big picture remains the same.
I remember when CAMD was announced, and Pennington and IBM. All were good news, but they were not game changers. BR still wound up with the same problems, the same issues, and the same problems.
It would be great to see the area from Downtown to LSU boom, and urban revitalization really kick in for the good of the parish.

Pennington was the single largest donation to a college/university at the time. That was a big deal but their funding remains inconsistent today.
It's not a game changer, but IBM is another big win. It's too small to really diversify the regional economy on its own. Baton Rouge's tech sector salaries are still low. That's probably at least partially why they came here.
I would like to see another couple of companies like IBM move here.

Thanks for the info. I've been excited about this for a while as I've seen it going up. I thought it was a Whatacampus though, for training Whataburger employees. I'm a little less excited but it should still be a net positive for the city.

Texas just gets all the cool stuff.
NASA, Exxon, Halliburton.....and Whataburger.

The Water Campus could gentrify the Nicholson cooridor which would be a HUGE boon the the economy.
But I agree with you statement that there can be no true improvement unless we fundamentally change BR from within

We aren't so lucky.

It's great for Louisiana, Baton Rouge, and the rest of the country. It'll bring in top notch researchers from around the globe and house many agencies involved in Coastal Restoration, subsidence, MS River basin, and many other items important to Louisiana.
I know many on the political talk board despise science or research for that matter. But this is vital to Louisianas future.

IBM is another big win.
Last I heard IBM was short of the 500 jobs it was suppose to bring to BR. Do you know if they reached that target, and how they are doing?
The state invested a lot of money in that project, and hopes were for something really big.

Boondoggle building to serve as headquarters for multi-billion dollar boondoggle. The coastal restoration industry will succeed in enriching academia and connected consultants and contractors, but little else. And the failure will be blamed on insufficient funds, regardless of the amount spent.

Wrong. They met it, but the requirement goes up this year so they should be hiring quite a bit.

It's mixed use, but it a large research center that will be surrounded by retail, residential, and office spaces.
Here's a Map.

And it is supposed to take up the entire area between LSU and downtown? Half the buildings on campus still have window units; where's this magical funding coming from?
It's already going up numbnutts.

Actually they didn't make it in 2016, but they weren't penalized because they exceeded the previous goals.

Job creation at Baton Rouge IBM facility falls short of 2016 target
quote:
The Baton Rouge IBM Client Innovation Center fell 67 jobs short of the 500 full-time-equivalent positions it was suppose to create by June 30 under the terms of its 2013 cooperative endeavor agreement with the state.
Nevertheless, IBM remains in compliance with the agreement because the state allows the company to carry forward jobs created in previous years that exceeded the requirements for those years. During its first two years in operation, IBM created a total of 104 more full-time jobs than was required
I don't know what the 2017 targets are, but I hope they make it this year.

Mayor-President Sharon Weston-Broome needs to take charge of the water campus and ensure it's not commandeered by St. George types.
