Circumcision does prevent penile cancer.

Read about phimosis and paraphimosis.

Circumcision can be very useful.

This less than half statistic is very misleading. 33% are done after leaving the hospital by the pediatricians on the first wellness visit.

quote:

during their birth hospitalization

I think this is the key that's skewing the numbers.
Hospitals aren't doing it as much.
Many have it done in the pediatricians office on the first wellness visit.

quote:

Pediatricians perform approximately 33% of newborn circumcisions in the United States, according to a 2023-2024 study covering the period from 2010 to 2021. During this time, the proportion of circumcisions performed by pediatricians remained relatively stable, though the study also noted a significant increase in circumcisions performed by pediatric urologists and advanced practice providers

Also, the poor on Medicaid don't have much of a choice. They can't afford to pay out of pocket.

quote:

Insurance Coverage: States that discontinued Medicaid coverage for circumcision saw significant decreases in circumcision rates, particularly among publicly insured infants.

In a bit of irony, AIDS and STI's are higher in poor communities

quote:

Since 2012 both the World Health Organization and Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS have been promoting a higher rate of circumcision prevalence as a prevention against HIV transmission and some STIs in areas with high HIV transmission and low circumcision rates

I'm not single, lol... I just think that God made us exactly how we're meant to be and that elective procedures should be decided by the ones affected by said procedures. I also think infant ear piercing is barbaric as is female genital mutilation.

Yeah! I say leave the umbilical cord on too

Well, you can try but it does end up falling off on its own.

Although- there are benefits to the baby to delay tying off the cord upon delivery.

Penile cancer primarily is a disease of very old men.

Same could be said for appendectomies. Some people get appendicitis, some even die from it.

Approximately 80% of American men are circumcised, a figure based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data

Declining Rates: Overall circumcision rates have seen a decline from earlier periods, such as the 1960s when the rate was approximately 83.3%.
Shifting Demographics: The increasing proportion of Hispanic individuals in the U.S. population also contributes to the overall decrease in circumcision rates.

Basically, Hispanics on Medicaid aren't getting snipped.

Circumcision is healthier and massively reduces penile issues later in life

Nah. That was true in societies with poor hygiene, but not in societies in which frequent bathing takes place.

My dad was uncircumcised and was opposed to his three sons being circumcised. But my mom had it done because dad basically didn’t care. When I had my one boy (3 girls) I didn’t want him circumcised, but I wasn’t forceful about it. My wife had it done. My son has three boys, all uncircumcised. Six of my eight grandsons are uncircumcised. I think it’s the right call.

I don’t know about this because I was circumcised, but when my dad was lamenting that he wasn’t more insistent about this he said, “I can feel a gnat land on it.”

Doesn't prevent; lessens likelihood maybe

Those people with phimosis post puberty should get circumcised since it is medically necessary. I Just don’t think the other 95-99% should be forced to get surgery because of a condition the minority of men have.

Interesting map...

Something else I found interesting. It was government sponsored in Africa in this study from the early 2000's. I guess it helps most in countries with lesser hygiene than the US.

https://web.archive.org/web/20100309060025/https://www3.niaid.nih.gov/news/QA/AMC12_QA.htm

quote:

Among men in these trials, adult male circumcision reduced the risk of acquiring HIV infection by 48 percent in the Ugandan study and by 53 percent in the Kenyan study.

quote:

There are several proposed mechanisms for how male circumcision might reduce a man’s risk of HIV infection. The foreskin’s inner mucosal surface is more susceptible to HIV because it has more immune cells vulnerable to HIV infection than the external surface. Furthermore, the foreskin acts as a physical barrier, trapping HIV next to the mucosal surface of the penis for a longer period of time. In this moist environment, the virus can also survive longer, potentially increasing the risk of infection. Small tears in the foreskin as a result of intercourse could also promote entry of the virus. After circumcision the penile shaft and glans develops more epithelial keratinization, a process which makes the penis less susceptible to viral invasion.

quote:

Studies have shown that overall, 62 percent of adult males in Africa are circumcised. However, there are significant differences in these rates by region and tribal groups. In particular, male circumcision is strongly tied to religious beliefs. In Southern Africa, where the HIV epidemic is the most severe, rates of male circumcision are less than 20 percent.

Circumcision definitely would make more sense in parts of Africa with high multiples of sex partners and high incidence of disease.

Wow... so much information.
All I ever knew was what Dad told me back in the 70's.
"We're Republicans"..."Republicans are circumcised"
Honestly, all these years later I've never really given that much thought about my Beaver Basher.
It still works. Isn't that all that matters?
