Maybe they're protective because you're a creep. I remember when I was dating one past SO who had a ginormous dog. It was a 90lb black lab. The dog, who was normally very protective of outsiders, loved me immediately, which got me in great with the girl.
If you're a good person with good intentions who isn't a scared b&%#h, dogs will typically like and respect you.

My 60lb lab/husky/who knows what else is the exact opposite of protective
