Legal and consulting fees mount for East Baton Rouge Council on Aging

Between November 18 and March 30, the COA spent more than $31,000 on attorney’s fees with Breazeale, Sachse & Wilson, which was retained by the agency after allegations surfaced that the nonprofit COA might have violated state or federal election laws by campaigning for the millage.

One of the firm’s senior partners, Murphy Foster III, is representing the agency at a billing rate of $400 an hour. An associate on the case is billing $225 an hour.

The COA has also spent $20,000 of a total $32,700 contract with SSA Consultants, which was retained by the agency in December to “facilitate stakeholder outreach” efforts in connection with the millage, which will generate an estimated $7.8 million a year for the COA.
quote:
It is unknown how much Breazeale Sachse will bill the COA for services provided during those months. Invoices from November through March range from as low as $3,400 to as high as $8,100.
quote:
While $400 an hour isn’t an unusually high billing rate for a corporate attorney, even in a midsized market like Baton Rouge, it isn’t typical for nonprofit agencies like Councils on Aging to spend that much on legal fees.
quote:
The Jefferson Council on Aging, for instance, has an outside counsel who represents the agency on an as-needed basis at a discounted rate of less than $200 an hour, according to Jefferson Council on Aging Executive Director Al Robichaux.

C Denise will be tossing them right under the bus once those checks start bouncing

The documents do not include invoices for legal services provided in April or May, both of which were busy months for the COA.

Then they are going to need lawyer fees to defend themselves on those thefts.
Vicious cycle.
Vicious cycle.

When you think about it, the family who was bilked by the COA is partially footing the bill for the COA to defend itself against the accusation of said bilking.

Just imagine how much money they'll piss away with an $8 million/year budget. They're allegedly in dire need of funding yet they don't even attempt to find discounted legal counsel for a non-profit.
The fact that they're allowed such a massive budget of tax payer money with essentially no govt oversight is absolutely stunning. The COA will be the biggest Democrat slush fund in the state.

No. $400 an hour for top-notch CRIMINAL DEFENSE is about right. They were just forecasting their future needs when they retained those folks.
Not to get all Poli Board but... This really is the classic Big Government method of "it's not my money" and just spending without even trying to save a buck.

Oh, for sure. That's what I've been saying. They can't manage their alleged "insufficient" funds but demand that the public put their full faith and trust in them to handle a multi million dollar annual budget. I guarantee their accounting is going to be a goddamn dumpster fire filled with abortions. And since they have no govt oversight or govt accountability, they won't get in any trouble for it. The worst thing that will happen is they will say "We didn't know we couldn't do that but we have written new policy that ensures it won't happen again."
It's a perfect storm for massive corruption, fraud, and vote-buying. This is going to be BR's own personal Tammany Hall.

"They caught us stealing money! Quick, spend it all to get rid of the evidence!"

Yep, no diversity, but that's good as long as they're not white

Which is about $350 an hour more than he is worth.
