If we've learned anything from the Brits and the Romans, it's that diversity is NOT a strength.

Winston Churchill said after seeing the US moving North that he was both sad and excited the allies will win the war. Excited because they defeated the Germans but sad because the British Empire will cease being a world power now and forever.

Fumbling the bag with that society all because they wanted to squeeze more money out of them and stop them from growing.

They didn't stop slavery, they stopped the trans-Atlantic slave trade

They did much more than that.

They stopped it in most of Africa and used economic and military pressure to end it in the Islamic world.

Britain was definitely new Rome. Europe's place as a world power owes much of its success to the organization and trade structure brought in by the Romans. Most of the most successful non-Euro countries today were once British colonies.

Im not sure we can give the British Empire the credit for developing American society.

Ive long thought the vastness of the land itself, along with the rebel nature of a lot of the early settlers in the wilderness created the American spirit.

Plus you add the influence of french and spanish settlers. The French in particular hated everything about the Brits at the time.

Related to current world events if the British hadn't promised the same patch of land to both the Bedouins and the Jews to get them to help the British fight the Turks in WWI it would be less likely the Middle East would be in turmoil, or at least the exact turmoil, currently.

For sure. The Brits double crossed Hussein. And he was real salty about it.

But Balfour and Milner were in tight with Rothschild.

Their biggest folly was arrogance. The policy of "Make The World England" was pure arrogance. Anytime you start with the idea that your king was made king by divine right, your country will eventually fail.
Born from this was their greatest contribution to civilization, The Magna Carta. A document limiting the power of the king.

I've been reading up on the 19th century British empire and through WW2. It seems a very mixed bag of good and bad.
Take a look at the history of the Middle East since the start of the 20th century. How they drew countries with very little consideration of "who lived where" is a big part of 21st century instability. They have done both good and bad but their hubris in drawing those lines is their most enduring legacy.

The creation of the modern state of Israel, turning it back into THE global flashpoint has done the world no favors.

The Brits had a penchant for creating and maintaining divisions they could exploit later but that one will keep blood flowing for the foreseeable future.

Ive never heard of that. I have heard of ancient cultures that would burn the spouses and concubines of their leaders when they died

If I recall the story correctly, local leaders told the British commander this was their culture and they were not to interfere. The British commander responded with something along the lines of and my culture will ensure than any man participating in such activities will hang at dawn. Needless to say, that was the end of that beautiful cultural element.
