True and that may be their greatest impact on America.

I have a friend from London. He asked me at lunch one day, why do Americans think they need so many guns? I told him the reason we have the 2nd amendment isnt for shooting burglars. Its for shooting tyrants, like the British. He thought i was joking.

He was not. He owned a ton of mining ops in Africa. It was said his fortune was incalculable. He was a big time British imperialist. Also a close ally of the Rothschild family.

In his will he stated that his goal was for the British to reclaim the Americas.

Think if you were born in like 1890 in Britain. The empire did in fact cover the globe.

If you lived through the world wars and rebellions, by the time you were ~90 the last great battle won by your country would be to a victory against Argentina over the Falkland islands.

Contrast to the fall of the Roman Empire which took centuries.

For those to think the USA couldn't fall in a matter of decades just watch and see, it may happen in your lifetime.

I read a book about an American who fought in the Rhodesian War. He met Rhodes' half-black daughter living in the bush. All she had of her father was a couple of old, faded photos. She wound up getting killed by the rebels.

Many folks say the Roman Empire fell and became the Catholic Church. Some say the British Empire fell and became the world's bank. It looks like if the US empire falls we will become the world's arms dealer.

Their worldwide dominance allowed them to stop slavery.

Any empire is only as good as what you can hold on to.

They bit off more than they could chew too fast. Granted two world wars didn't help.

A fascinating alternate history of the world would be if the US had lost the war of independence. Would we be better or worse off? Also, would this have turned into a Portugal/Brazil scenario where the formal seat of English power eventually comes across the ocean to North America?

That's not exactly true, especially in Britain. Within a decade Britain went from being solidly Roman to having no trace of it left.

The Royal Navy pretty much put a halt to the trans-Atlantic slave trade too.

Kind of true but the Germans also did it to themselves both times.

They really messed up by bombing Pearl Harbor.

Spreading English and financial systems around the globe.

Israel. They created a buffer (Israel) after the Ottoman Empire tried to take over the Suez Canal. Probably could have been managed better than just kicking a lot of families off their land.

Along with the Roman Empire, one of the two eras that really made the world what it is. Both brought civilization and order to the hinterlands. Neither could manage their holdings very well. Rulers and empires get overstretched and complacent.

Well said. The two empires that largely exported the rule of law and modernity to its holdings.

The USA is the third.

Thank the lord it was the Brits who built our modern world and not the French/Germans/Russians/Japanese/Chinese

I think they overestimated the benefit their systems would have on the local populations. The spread of the english education system was a huge success. But they erroneously believed that logic and reason would win out over countless generations of hatred and warring between the indigenous populations they sought to control. And they kept trying to make it work.

They would pick a local warlord and support their regime. Then the other groups would just develop a deeper hatred for the warlord and a new hatred for their british master.

I think the Ottoman Empire gets overlooked a lot. The vacuum that was created when they fell is what led us to a lot of the conflicts we still see in that part of the world today.

Yea they do. And were a pretty effective administrative state.

Soviet Union fell in about 4 years and the grip was way tighter than here. It's still mindblowing how quickly it ended there

Some people dont think it can happen here. But it seems more likely than ever.
