What purpose do they serve? Nothing. Lawns have to be maintained. And for what?
A fourth of your house is a living room that nobody ever goes into for any reason.
I hate both of them.

You don't use your living room?

We have 2 living rooms, one for me and one for the rest of my family.

You’re underestimating the point of a living room.

Other than the time spent sleeping, we spend 90% of our time in the living room.

Most OT hundred thousand dollar millionaire 2000 sq ft mcmansions have open combined living room/kitchens so it gets used a ton.

If you have both a den and a living room, I see your point.

The living room should be converted into something useful. Billiards if you have the area.

Maybe I should clarify and say older homes. Most people call the tv room the den. The living room is separate and useless.

The most meaningful room in my house is the hall bathroom.

Sitting sipping on the back patio with my healthy children playing outside while I'm puffing on a cigar is one of life's greatest treasures

If I’m on my lawn & fart, I don’t mind if my neighbors hear it, but I prefer they not smell it

The den is a casual space for TVs and kids. A living room allows you space for the family or to have people over without being bombarded by TVs and active kids. The reason people don't understand why this room exists results largely from being conditioned to always sit in front of a tv. Most modern homes are designed around watching television.
