Drop from the eye. The dew point depression is a result of all the sinking air into the eye and just another thing typical of powerful hurricanes.

I understand people not wanting to leave for a storm. It is awful.

Assuming they make it through unscathed, the worst part of the whole ordeal is the aftermath.

We waited a week before coming back to Abita after Katrina. It was like living in a bizzaro world. It was almost a month before we had power. We lost so many trees it took a week of three of us with chainsaws sun up to sun down to clear them. I remember laying on the bare tile because it was the only way to escape the heat.

frick all that.

But mostly you, as God is giving you a massive reason just offshore to get the frick out...

NWS needs to get rid of the 1-5 categorical rating system.

All that's needed is Hurricane and Major Hurricane.

Then maybe people would stfu with all of this "OMGZ WILL IT BE A CAT 5?!?!?!?!" bullshite.

It doesn't fricking matter. Florence (Cat 1) killed more people than Michael (Cat 5). But it was "only a Cat 1 no big deal..."

IMO there's definitely time to strengthen to a cat 5, but at this point, there's no difference in destruction.

A 5 instead of a 4 just goes ahead and clears your slab off for you rather than having to demolish the remnants of your home and clear it yourself

Same here man. We went to Ferriday. Came back and I just remember the smell of freshly cut pine trees and the change in the tree line, especially starting at dogpound rd at hwy 59.

Meh...there’s a good system—mandatory evacuations. If you don’t listen to those then you won’t listen to any type of “rating system”

Jeff the Blue Shed storm chaser
Did an update from Vinton's Sonic, said he's most likely going to LC.
He's building up chemical plant fires in Port Arthur and flooding issues

A tree or two already down in Sulphur with a squall.

Lot of water oaks in the area.

If it comes in at a 5, how the hell did the wiff so badly on the strength? I mean, that can endanger lives. people who stay thinking it will be a 3, trusting the reports, get stuck in the path of a 5.

We often get too caught up in intensity models. They are non-exact, ever-evolving, and potentially flawed programs. While they are a great guide, paying attention to the overall setup for a storm is just as, if not more important, than following models religiously.

The great meteorologists will tell you this. They have experience in knowing what to look for that will lead to major development. You cannot ignore that gut when it is based on years of experience in the field.

A good example of this is the folks who took what the HWRF and HMON was showing several days ago, overlayed it with the current environment that the system would be moving into, and started warning of the potential for a major, strengthening system in the Gulf. FYI, Mark Sudduth was one who did this. He was insistent, days ago, that this system had the potential to be a major hurricane. He, unfortunately, was right.

This. Over a month for us. The aftermath is a nightmare. We went to Houston and enrolled our kids in school. Perfect description of living in a bizarro world.

Feel terrible for the people in the path of this storm.
