Great question! Our commitment to our existing agreement/pact with Ukraine, displayed in abundance I would argue, certainly may have helped convince them of the safe-guards associated with our promises/commitments.
But, as you said... who knows?

I see no major reason to get directly involved with this
The inherent value of protecting a sovereign nation seems like reason enough to me (one aligning more with the west as of recent), especially when involving Russia trying to bolster themselves up at the expense of others, to frame it lightly.
I can appreciate your points in retort, it just seems like we view the situation from a different perspective.

but at this point I'd take a settlement of giving Russia the Donbas region.
You would legitimize a sovereign nation being invaded and having their land seized?

Of course, but I don't think that's an excuse for continuing to flirt with it
This isn't how geopolitics works.

I think you're confusing a globalized world with a globalization world
No. Globalization has already happened. Sourcing materials to make one product occurs through robust lines of trade, kept open by mostly the US, who have been the prime mover in globalization and have been the major beneficiary. This is reality. Because US corporate interests extend to every area of the globe, so do US interests at large.

Why when you have the opportunity to take back the Donbas and Crimea?

Well thank god you aren't leading the Ukrainians.

I have a growing fear that when Russia’s failure becomes too obvious for Russia to ignore, China is going to extract a very high price to offer Russia a way out. Imagine a Russia so desperate for aid that it is forced to sign up to a humiliating Belt and Road plan.
The west must walk a tightrope to both bring about a Ukrainian victory while avoiding a Russian national humiliation. Even though Russia probably deserves it, the cost of them falling into the Chinese orbit is frightening.
1. Russia is already partners with China in its new belt and road initiative. How do you think the majority of the goods transported by rail from China reach Europe? Over railroads that run through Russia. Russia and China are also partners in developing a northern sea route.
2. China's military tech is based on reverse engineered Russian tech and stolen western tech. China can steal all the blueprints of western tech it wants but that does not mean that it can make it work. For example, the CH-4B (Chinese copy of the American reaper drone) has crashed 22 times in recent years. We have seen how Russian tech has fared against western tech, why should the Chinese be any different?

Ask yourself this question. Would Russia still have invaded Ukraine without any money pouring in.

You are batshit crazy and mistaken on nearly all points.

AS the impetus for the invasion was to take control of additional natural resources and gain complete access and control of ports on the Black Sea, I would say yes. How else would they achieve this?

I think Europe, the US, and most importantly Ukraine are very interested in resolving this thing.
You expect Ukraine to just roll over after what Russia has done?
