We need a power play, just get that first domino to fall then a nice blood bath at the top.

Agreed - but after all the Putin health rumors over the last few months, it wouldn't surprise me.

I’m gonna love hearing what compromat there is on Vlad when he goes. There’s always been rumours he offed folks that knew back when he was KGB, but this is like Scientology level compromat from what I’ve heard.

Not sure what you mean by "they".. Some were not under any illusion to the outcome.. most notably was Admiral Yamamoto. But others definitely thought they could win and Pearl Harbor almost assured the victory. You have to remember that there was an attempted "coup" to prevent the emperor surrendering after the 2nd atomic bomb ..

It wouldn’t matter over the long term. The Russian people don’t seem to understand democracy and prefer to have someone tell them what to do. Another tyrant will take power over that sad nation soon after Vlad bites the dust.

As far as Patrushev I inquired about him and people are saying hardline but less intelligent than Vlad ie more susceptible to shiny objects so he could be bought.
I wonder of the Russian people would accept a transition from Putin to someone else just on the basis that the new person was selected by Putin. Their outward statements have always clothed Putin with some sort of constitutional authority. They do not represent their government as a dictatorship or a monarchy. It isn’t at all clear (at least to uninformed outsiders) how an actual transition of executive power in Russia would work.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to undergo cancer surgery and temporarily hand over power to a hardline former federal police chief, according to a new report.
Putin will transfer control of Russia’s government to Nikolai Patrushev, head of the Russian federal police’s Security Council, while he is incapacitated during and after the procedure, according to a video from the mysterious Telegram channel “General SVR” on Saturday.
Is this in accordance with their "constitution"? I'm guessing there is no position of "vice President"

If they did have a line of succession in the constitution, Vlad just merged them all into just being himself anyway.

They have a line of succession. It's supposed to go to the Prime Minister, a hand-picked #2, who at the moment is a guy named Mishutin who came up through the ranks of civil servants and I think is there because he's non-threatening to Putin. Security service men like this fellow Patrushev, who is head of the security council, would be contenders in the case of a Death of Stalin type funeral games, but that would also include some oligarchs who are former security service people and never fully give it up.

I saw that report yesterday. The report that I saw said it was abdominal cancer.
This guy is the one that supposedly convinced Putin that he could rely on the pre-invasion intel about Ukraine falling fast and they would be welcomed as liberators by the Ukrainian people. Inner circle with Putin. Former KGB thugs are running Russia.

Shows how much I pay attention to internal Russian politics. I though Medvedev was still Prime Minister.

Autocracy has certain advantages, but over careers are made giving the boss info he wants to hear. I think this got worse for Putin during COVID when he was really restricting his contacts. Patrushev is the guy who packages info for him (can sort of think of it as National Security Advisor + political advisor) and is probably 2nd-most responsible for the war.

Medvedev went out a couple of years ago but is still hanging around and trying to remake himself into a hawk, after trying to sell Europe on a Pan-Euroasian co-prosperity sphere or some bullshite like that.

Russian Oligarch and bank boss says Putin must hang for his crimes!
I still hope that somewhere floating around from people who can make it happen there's a message: "Last oligarch to open fire NEVER gets his boat back."

Decide for yourself - Mystery Russian account claims Vladimir Putin set to undergo cancer surgery
Posted on 5/2/22 at 2:58 pm to TigerDoc
With this (possible) surgery and his (possible) Parkinson's added to the list, Putin is showing a fatal level of weakness to the siloviki. Patrushev will be lining up his supporters. He won't instigate an outright coup but Putin will never get complete control back again. The Kremlin will be under the rule of two groups - Putin and Patrushev - and with every failure in Ukraine and the present sabotage campaign in Russia, Patrushev will gain more power.
