On April 13, the Russian army struck the central part of Sumy with Iskander missiles . One of the missiles hit the building of Sumy State University. A bus passing by was also damaged. 35 people were killed.

Among the deceased...

The Martynenko family

The death of sixth-grader Maksym Martynenko and his parents Mykola and Natalia was reported at the Starosilsky Lyceum:

"Our hearts are broken by today's news. What a pity that we will never meet again within the walls of our native lyceum. May the kingdom of heaven and eternal peace be with you."

So you would be ok with it if they don’t use seized Russian assets to pay for them?

Trump rejected Ukraine's proposal to buy Patriot missiles for $50bn by using EU funds and frozen Russian assets. Zelensky proposed buying missiles at €5.5 million per unit following recent Russian attacks in Kryvy Rih and Sumy that killed 56 civilians, including 11 children.
This could be an emerging strategy. Making Trump show his obvious subservience to Putin each and every time he makes a decision about Ukraine will highlight to everyone that there is no other explanation for these decisions. Gradually the denial and rationalization will fall away and Putin's complete ownership of Trump will be plain to any one with an open mind.

I don't personally care if they DO use the Russian assets to pay for it.

I'm making an observation as to why someone might not do it.

You need to look at it this way.

It’s been said over and over again that Russia is winning the war and will eventually take over Ukraine; consequently, if we let Ukraine buy Patriot Missiles it will be good for Russia since they will be using the Patriots to protect Russian assets from being destroyed as they are now.

Understand?

Jake Sullivan - the Kremlin's 'White House Staffer of the Year, 2022, '23 and '24': The only reason Putin was sorry to see Biden leave.

After three months of perspective showing everyone how wrong his 'escalation management' was, Hand Wringer goes to Harvard to re-write the narrative. Harvard is the perfect place, it has the cache' to intimidate the weak-minded and if anyone is sympathetic to a lying sack of shite trying to cover their crimes by bending the truth, it's them. All the big idea boys crawl under the same rock.

Fact check: A 2023 request for production and procurement of up to 1,700 additional ATACMS went unfunded by the 2023 Defense Appropriations Act.

China’s Oil Imports Hit Record High in March

In March, China increased its oil imports to a record 12 million barrels per day (bpd). According to China’s General Administration of Customs, a total of 51.5 million tons of oil were imported last month. This surge was driven by the recovery of supplies from Iran and Russia, compensating for reduced imports from other countries.

Looking ahead, analysts at Vortex predict that China will maintain high levels of oil purchases, with a significant portion destined for independent refineries.

Trump and his only friends once again voted against the UN resolution condemning Russia's aggression against Ukraine.

Russia
North Korea
Belarus
Eritrea
Nicaragua
Mali
Sudan
Niger
US

Putin voted twice. And we all know why.

Id like for Zelensky to tell us what he going to do to pay back the 300 billion in weapons and support we have already given him, that would be a start. Since he has decided it would mean US control of industries and not in his best interest..........lets see what attitude adjustment he gets when there are no Patriot Missiles left.

And paying for weapons with stolen money is a bold strategy, I think Russia will continue to take it out of his hide.

And where were you guys when cargo pants was bombing Donbas, supposedly his people, years ago? Suddenly some Russian strikes and you are all up in arms?

Good to hear their local manufacturing of weapons has increased 98 fold......I hope the cia is taking our logo off we fire them.

Our weapons run out sometime in June, lets see how all these "pledges" for weapons work out.....kind of like the "pledges" to global warming I bet.

zelensky should have made peace two years ago, now he has nothing to negotiate with.

Russian Army Breaks Through Ukrainian Defenses in Yampolevka-Torskoye Sector

The intensity of fighting in the Liman area is quite high every day. The Russian Armed Forces are expanding the control zone around the Zherebets River.

Russian troops have found another weak spot in the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ defense and are gaining a foothold on the outskirts of Torskoye. ?"Strange processes are happening with the team that holds this area of ??responsibility, because they are causing a lot of trouble for the subcontractors on both sides and something needs to be done about this," complains the DS resource working for the GUR. ?The Russian Armed Forces are also conducting an offensive south of Liman in the Belogorovka area. The area is in the active phase of hostilities with a dynamic transition of positions from hand to hand

Storm Clouds Over Zelensky: Western Media Finally Call Out His Power Grab

Even the West can’t ignore it anymore — the mask is slipping. The Economist openly writes that real power in Ukraine is no longer in parliament or the government, but in the tight inner circle of Zelensky himself: Andriy Yermak, the shadowy head of the presidential office; Dmitry Litvin, his ghostwriter; and Oleg Tatarov, the man overseeing the security services. Even Zelensky’s own former allies are being locked out of the game.

??Former president and leader of Ukraine’s largest opposition party, Petro Poroshenko, has had his assets seized and stands accused of “treason.” As MP Oleksiy Honcharenko puts it: “If Poroshenko can be eliminated without trial — then anyone can.”

??Popular top commander Valerii Zaluzhnyi? Fired — and quietly shipped off to London as an ambassador. Former foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba, ex-infrastructure chief Oleksandr Kubrakov, and reconstruction head Mustafa Nayyem — all sidelined without explanation.

Zelensky once promised democracy. Now, even Western media admit it: Ukraine is becoming a one-man show. And the price of dissent? Exile, disgrace, or worse.

KYIV, April 16 (Reuters) - Ukraine's parliament has extended martial law until August, lawmakers said, delaying the timing of new elections that the United States and Russia have been pushing for. Pool

As the war with Russia rages on, an overwhelming majority of 357 deputies on Wednesday supported the extension. It allows the country to continue mobilizing troops and suspends the election cycle.

Allies cheer over Germany’s Taurus announcement -

quote:

BERLIN – Allies have reacted with praise after Germany’s chancellor-to-be, Friedrich Merz, said that he will greenlight the controversial delivery of German long-range missiles to Ukraine.

The delivery of Taurus KEPD-350 missiles has long been a bone of contention in Germany, as the incumbent chancellor, Olaf Scholz, had previously blocked its delivery, arguing that it would drag Germany into Russia’s war in Ukraine if used against Russian targets.

Merz, a long-standing critic of Scholz’s stance on Taurus, said during a television interview on Sunday night that he will facilitate exports of the missiles to Ukraine, if European partners agree.

The decision was welcome by participants of the monthly meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels on Monday. “I think that would be a very important signal as to where Europe stands in this situation,” said Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp.

His Polish counterpart, Radoslaw Sikorski, called Merz's offer “very good”.

“We must do more so that Ukraine can defend itself and civilians do not have to die,” the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, said.

Decisions on weapons exports are jointly made by the chancellor, the vice-chancellor, and a number of ministers. However, the chancellor has the final say.

Britain, France, and the United States have already delivered their own long-range missile models to Ukraine.

PARIS, April 18 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump will walk away from trying to broker a Russia-Ukraine peace deal within days unless there are clear signs that a deal can be done, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Friday.

quote:

Rubio's comments on Friday underline mounting frustrations in the White House over a lack of progress in pushes to settle a growing list of geopolitical challenges. Trump promised during his election campaign to end the war in Ukraine within his first 24 hours in the White House. He moderated that claim on taking office, suggesting a deal by April or May as obstacles mounted.

That "I'll end the war in Ukraine in 24 hours" involved you know, like work and commitment and stuff. Too much time interfering with the golf course outings to Florida. Besides, Putin was humiliating him so much with civilian terror attacks that people were starting to wonder just how weak and compromised Donnie really is.

Now they know.

ISW Update April 17 2025

quote:

Key Takeaways:

Russian officials continue to reiterate Russian President Vladimir Putin's non-negotiable demands for extensive territorial concessions from Ukraine while noting that ongoing peace negotiations are unlikely to achieve results quickly.

Russian forces recently conducted a roughly battalion-sized mechanized assault across a wide front in western Zaporizhia Oblast, representing an inflection in recently observed Russian mechanized assault tactics.

The Kremlin is adopting increasingly threatening rhetoric towards Europe aimed at preventing Europe from supporting Ukraine and defending itself.

Russia is increasingly adapting its drones to facilitate chemical weapons strikes against the frontline and rear areas of Ukraine — in violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), of which Russia is a signatory.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that the United States and Ukraine are making progress towards signing a bilateral mineral deal.

European countries continue to increase their domestic defense production, including in support of Ukraine.

Ukrainian forces recently advanced near Toretsk. Russian forces recently advanced in Kursk Oblast and near Kupyansk, Toretsk, Pokrovsk, Novopavlivka, and Velyka Novosilka and in western Zaporizhia Oblast.

If our efforts to stop the war in Ukraine fail within days, we will tell Trump that negotiations are no longer a viable option, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said.

"If both sides really want peace, we are ready to help. If not, we move on. [...] The US has been supporting Ukraine for three years, but now it's time to focus on something else," he added.

what if only 1 side doesnt want peace?

The U.S. has released a memorandum on economic partnership with Ukraine: investments in security, recognition of Ukraine's contribution to global security after giving up nuclear weapons, and support for EU integration without barriers. Rubio says the EU should take a more active role in ending the war, suggesting that lifting European sanctions could be used as “part of a peace agreement.”

So having seen the full comments by Rubio, sounds like he presented the draft deal (which would require Europeans to lift sanctions on Russia) to the Ukrainian delegation in Paris, which is taking it back to Kyiv for a Zelensky decision — and the threat of walking away is in fact primarily directed at Ukraine.
