ISW Update Jan 24

quote:

Key Takeaways:

Russian President Vladimir Putin is once again attempting to obfuscate his unwillingness to participate in good-faith negotiations to end the war by blaming Ukraine for defending itself against Russia's invasion and illegal annexation of Ukrainian territory.

Zelensky signed the decree in September 2022 banning negotiations with Putin in direct response to Putin's illegal annexation of four regions in eastern and southern Ukraine and after months of negotiations in which Russia continued to demand Ukraine's full capitulation.

Zelensky has consistently signaled his willingness to negotiate with Russia and make certain compromises in pursuit of peace, however, following the 2022 decree banning formal negotiations with Putin.

Putin meanwhile continues to signal to both his domestic and global audiences that he is not interested in peace short of his full demands and remains committed to Ukraine's complete capitulation.

Putin is attempting to leverage the 2022 decree as a strawman to hide the reality of his disinterest in negotiations and to sow discord between Ukraine and its Western allies.

Putin also attempted to position himself as Trump’s equal during his interview, reinforcing his long-held belief that Russia is the great-power heir to the Soviet Union.

Putin demonstrated that he is worried about the effect that lower oil prices would have on his domestic stability and ability to wage his war in Ukraine.

The Kremlin is attempting to revive its information operation aimed at deterring the US and other Western states from providing further military assistance to Ukraine.

The Kremlin is framing the new 2025 Union State Security Concept as completely superseding the original 1999 Security Concept, indicating that this new agreement may be more expansive than the original and will further forward the Kremlin's effort to annex Belarus.

Ukrainian forces conducted a large series of drone strikes against Russian defense industrial enterprises and oil refineries on the night of January 23 to 24 as part of an ongoing strike series aimed at degrading Russian military capacity.

Russian forces recently advanced in Kursk Oblast and near Chasiv Yar, Toretsk, Pokrovsk, Kurakhove, and Velyka Novosilka.

Ukrainian forces recently recaptured lost positions near Toretsk.

Are we going to see threats of nuclear Armageddon again or is the just increased copy paste and posting on message boards?

There must have been some kind of red alert on the Poliboard to send everyone over here with absurd triumphalism, thinking that aid to Ukraine was cut off, instead of Trump ending a program worldwide that -- for Ukraine -- amounted to taking a few coins under the sofa cushion.

Why did you come here ranting today? Did you think that Trump cut off aid to Ukraine?

The war is effectively over, dude. That’s why we’re here to shove it in your face that you were fricking wrong.

I think that everyone here expected that the war would end at some point. Please explain how you think people were wrong.

We’ll see how crazy I am when October hits. It’s a stalemate for now, but Europe is about to lose its shite once winter comes.

Do you dummies think Europe is going to stand for this for much longer just so you warmongers can continue your drunken LARP? You’re an idiot if you don’t think this is going to come to a major end or at least massive change once winter hits. I know y’all are having fun with this, but y’all are in for such a rude awakening.

The fall of Kharkiv is imminent. Almost certainly in the next 48 hours.

And if the Ukrainians or quite frankly us settled in say April 2022, they would have kept Kharkiv. So just great job by everyone here.

I’m the one looking for a middle ground, but if Ukraine gets a worse deal, please know that it’s people like yours fault that this happened. Had we negotiated back in April 2022 like should have happened, it would have been much better.

We did negotiate back in April 2022. Putin walked away because of “security assurances” for Ukraine.

He must think that something actually happened today. The idiots high on their own farts must have told him that Trump ended aid to Ukraine or something.

In general not at you personally. This whole thread should be deleted it’s just a bunch of personally attacks. Not much useful info anymore.

Believe it or not, back when OML was still banned and before we gotten 40 twitter posts a day from ayden and Lord Bebo, this place used to actually discuss the war.

The best thing that Chicken could do for the place would be to turn off Twitter embeds for this thread.

"USAID (United States Agency for International Development) has frozen projects to support Ukraine — Reuters

All US projects supporting Ukraine have been frozen and staff have been instructed to suspend their activities, Reuters reported, citing a USAID representative.

All decisions regarding continuation, modification, or termination of programs will be made by Secretary Rubio after conducting a review within 85 days."

I don’t have twitter and I avoid it being allergic to propaganda. Now this place (thread in particular) is more or less forced Twitter.

Bring back ignore function at minimum. Problem solved.

There is plenty of useful information. We are able to see both sides posting information about the War. I have no problem people posting Ghost of Kyiv stories from NAFO trolls. That is what free speech is about. Post both sides and you can determine yourself what seems more logical. Very weird behavior to want to have one side or the other not be able to post
