In my opinion your post about Russia’s conventional military being completely outmatched by the west makes Nuclear War Putin’s only real option if he gets into a war with NATO.

if putin is still sane and rational....he cares about power and legacy.

I dont know that...I know he's threatened it. Turkey shot down one of his planes and he didnt do shite.

A) He was unlawfully in their airspace.

B) He had previously sank a Japanese and Moldavian vessel that did not declare war on Russia over that, so he had no room to talk.

C) He’s got bigger fish to fry than Turkey right now.

D) Turkey is in NATO, so if he directly attacks it, it is WWIII.

Again, you don’t know anything and would get us killed with your recklessness and straw manning of your enemy.

President Leeroy Jenkins over here. Yes we may be in WWIII, but we’d certainly be in WWIII right now with someone like you in charge.

Russia gets smashed in a conventional war with NATO. Russia gets incinerated in a nuclear war with NATO.

It's becoming a lose/lose scenario with a dictator with nothing left to lose.

Nobody wants that. Hopefully whatever advisors he has left understand this.

As far as Zelensky is concerned, World War III has already started. If I were Zelensky I would be doing the same thing as he is. Even Blinken said he’d be doing it if he were the Ukrainian Secretary of State, and it’s insane if I agree with anything that man says.

Exactly. Most are saying "OMG we're abandoning Ukraine" or "Zelensky is evil" over this

When the actual answer is he's desperate, we'd do the same thing, and the answer is still "sorry dude, but no"

Zelensky begging for No Fly Zone because it earns him points in the eyes of his citizens? There's no way he actually thinks it's a good idea.

Worst case scenario is Russia levels Ukraine and tries to nuke the West and the West responds by trying to nuke Russia. Best case scenario is that Russia continues to level Ukraine but is only able to level part of it. Zelensky has everything to gain and nothing to lose from a No-Fly zone or even WW3. Plus Zelensky knows that he is a dead man walking and he is trying to do everything he can to give his nation the best chance to survive once one of the Russian assignation attempts gets lucky.

But your mentality is just insanely reckless compared to every other poster in this thread. You are well underestimating what a desperate man will do in desperate times with the tools at his disposal. It’s best to treat Putin like a cornered tiger at this point with all his teeth and fangs at his availability.

No one in power in any NATO country is going to go for a no fly zone. That's a non-starter.

The best thing we can do now is to do our best to support Ukraine with as much stuff as we can and hope they can hold on.

What we can do and should do is ramp defenses the hell up in all nearby NATO countries. Putin will try to get away with everything he can get away with and will try to grab as much territory as he can. We should make it clear that any entry into any part of NATO can and WILL be met with unified force. And if any of his planes put so much as a wing-tip over the border of any NATO country, it should go down.

From what I am seeing on twitter and telegram if we keep the Ukrainians supplied with stingers they can enforce their own no fly zone. They could do it more effectively if somebody could somehow sneak the S300 batteries that Greece bought from Russia in the 90s into Ukraine.

I believe the current estimation is that Russia has 6500 nukes, we have 5100, and those two combined are 90% of the nukes in the world. Take it with a grain of salt, even our reported number of nukes. I’m especially skeptical of that due to China and China’s nearby enemies. I would not be shocked if Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan secretly had nukes.

We need to communicate with crystal clarity where our line in the sand is, and then give Putin an off ramp to avoid crossing it.

Biden did the first thing in his SOTU. Gotta believe they are working on the second thing as we speak.

How quickly people forget 1990s Iraq and Bosnia.

Bosnia made for great rating for CNN and the other media channels. Especially after the F117 crashed or was shot down. The media is licking their lips wanting more of that.

In a word no. Stingers aren't effective against fast movers. It is really no threat to fighters and fighter bombers unless the pilot has a death wish and cargo, as well as medium and heavy bombers, are only vulnerable on takeoff and landing. Rotary wing, UAVs, and propped light recon planes are the only thing they really scare.

I have a q for the people in here with some knowledge. Hypothetically, if Putin were taken out (obviously not likely), what immediate effects would take place logistically? Let's say he's taken out by his own people. What happens then? Would there be a power vacuum, are there contenders in place to immediately replace him, do they have a system in place for something like that? Would there be an election, retaliation, etc.? I'm just curious. I've seen a lot of "it would be the end of the world" takes but it would be interesting to know what would probably play out if it did happen. I'm assuming it would change based on who did the killing, if that could even be determined.

I think he’s just as likely to be replaced by a stronger authoritarian who will see this as a failure and act accordingly to do what everyone, Putin included, has thought Putin was doing and rebuild Russia into a strong and secure position in the world, as we are a more democratic leader. If we get a democratic leader, I think it’s likely they’re corrupt anyway.

I think this likely comes about as a power vacuum that’s quickly filled by someone taking it.

Just my opinion, not an expert. How I see this going if Putin is snuffed out.
