When you include the money we sent to Ukraine its officially 967 billion on defense or about 3.4% of GDP.

Most of Europe is at or above the 2% except Spain, Canada, and wait for it Belgium. Maybe if they hadnt spent so much fcking money on that huge NATO headquarters, they could have put some towards defense.

Its a negotiating tool by Trump, there is no way countries like Germany or France could get there, they are in financial messes right now. Trump knows this, oh well we will see about US and funding of Ukraine.

Ukraine's economy plummeted 30-35% the first year of the war, and poverty soared from 5% to 24%, but yeah Russia's economy yeah thats the ticket.

Russia warned you, and you would not listen cause big bad US was backing you, Vic Nuland told ya so.

What really pisses me off is the US "loaned" 20 billion to Ukraine this month to be "guaranteed" by Russia assets seized. Russia will want that money back, just like we gave it back to Iran.....with interest.

And Blinken and Biden knew this, thats why the US guaranteed it and Europe sat on their arse and did not raise a hand to help with the loan.

Im certain the balance of 30 billion more will go out the door before Trump gets in office.

Wonder what they are buying with that money since we cant manufacture weapons for it, golly gee, wonder where it will go????

Exactly why I voted for Trump. Common sense foreign policy. Backing Ukraine and all the while pushing for peace. That’s the way to go.

I haven’t seen anyone anywhere post that Ukraine’s economy is doing well. I’ve seen plenty of people say Russia isn’t doing well.

You know both nations can be struggling at the same time.

"Trump’s team has told European officials that the [he] will demand NATO member states increase defence spending to 5% of GDP, but plans to continue supplying military aid to Ukraine."

Well, that blows some Putin Bros hopes and dreams right out of the water, will boost the shite out of the profits of the Arms sector ( and the US economy) and I will say I'm glad to be wrong about what I expected him to do... and I hope it holds.

ISW Update

Key Takeaways:

Russian ballistic missile strikes damaged several embassies in central Kyiv on the morning of December 20.

Ukrainian forces reportedly conducted their first attack solely using unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) and first-person view (FPV) drones, highlighting Ukraine's ongoing efforts to leverage technological innovation into ground operations.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced his intention to orient Russia's political and ideological priorities for 2025 around Russian veterans.

The Kremlin continues to scapegoat Kursk Oblast civil servants for its failure in responding to Ukraine's Kursk Oblast incursion.

Russian forces recently advanced in Kursk Oblast, near Kupyansk, within Toretsk, and in the Vuhledar direction.

Russian opposition outlet Mediazona reported on December 20 that it has confirmed that at least 20,364 Russian soldiers have been killed in action (KIA) in Ukraine since January 1, 2024.

Hey, you evil person taking pleasure in war crimes whose purpose is to torture civilians, I will tell you that the propaganda reports of how bad it is in Kyiv are as stupidly overinflated as the reports of the awesomeness of Oreshnik.

Wasn't this war over months ago? Why are you still here?

Let's not pretend Ukraine is innocent of this. War is hell, especially for Ukraine in a war it didn't start. However, dropping explosives on injured soldiers that can't walk, probably were forced to be there, and are trying to surrender to a drone seems like a war crime to me.

Where are SirWinston and texag and the other Putin-lovers who promised that Trump would stop all aid to Ukraine on Day 1? They promised many, many times that it would happen.

Trump didn't say he would stop sending aid.

He said he would end the war in one day.

Two different things.

Interesting detail about European discussion of Biden's (good) plan for Europe to finance Ukraine's future by donating the seized Russian assets, instead of simply using them to guarantee loans:

quote:

Olaf Scholz was exasperated. At a meeting of EU leaders this week to brainstorm ways to maintain support for Ukraine when Donald Trump returns as US president, the German chancellor became irate that an idea he has regularly shot down was being touted again.

At the discussions at the home of Nato secretary-general Mark Rutte in Brussels on Wednesday night, Polish President Andrzej Duda called for the EU to confiscate and spend the €260bn worth of Russian sovereign assets immobilised at European financial institutions — an idea promoted by the US and UK but resisted by Germany, France and Italy.

“You don’t understand how this would affect the stability of our financial markets,” Scholz barked across the table at Duda, startling other leaders present, according to three people briefed on the discussions. “You don’t even use the euro!”

Correct. We aren't discussing Trump's promises right now, but rather, the promises of SirWinston, texag, and the other trolls.

Or more accurately... “You don’t understand how this would affect the stability of German banks floating my political party."

Scholtz loses credibility every time he speaks. Hard to believe he has any left.

The European banks holding these funds didn't object to the sources of this money but will do anything, including destroying the reputation of the German government to keep it. Reminds us of the Swiss banks fighting tooth and nail to keep the funds deposited by thousands of Holocaust victims.

Anyone taking anything definitive from Trump's statements is missing the mark. He has said he wants to end the war. You won't get a good deal from Ukraine if you're telling everyone that you're cutting them off.

My hope is that Trump makes both sides realize the reality of their situations, and those realities get them to end the conflict. The play the entire time on the Trump side imo has been to tell Putin that aid is going to ramp up if he doesn't stop, and to tell Zelensky that aid isn't going to last forever and he needs to start being realistic about peace demands.
