I didn't think that, not that my assessment mattered. I looked up the size of Ukraine's forces in total and the estimated size of the forces Russia had on their border and they weren't over matched

Russia FUBAR at Hostamel. Taking and holding it would have landed many transports with little in their way to taking Kyiv.

Russia failed to establish air dominance which by all accounts it could have.

The strategy of sending a convoy through a large swamp on a single road was just stupid, and with poorly maintained vehicles even worse.

For Ukraine, allowing Russia to take Popasna was a really bad move. This allowed Russia to travel along an east-west ridge and cut off Lysychansk from being supplied resupplied as it held the heights above Severodonetsk, where they could pound Russians at will.

A lot of them would to test their skills against Russians. Early on I spoke with a retired A-10 squadron commander who told me told me that easy as pie to get 150 or more, experienced pilots to even volunteer for shits and giggles to kill Russians.

A-10s were specifically designed to attack Russian armor through heavy air defense in flat terrain of the western European plains. 50% casualty rate before reaching target was considered acceptable, and return to base next to nil is how they were trained per Alex.

An older biz friend's son would in a heartbeat. He loved his time flying, but his experience in both Gulf Wars was F-15 Eagle. He is now in a National Guard because the Air Force put him at a desk when he made colonel. ANG allows him to still fly and as general.

ISW Update Sept 26th

quote:

Key Takeaways:

Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to threaten the possibility of a nuclear confrontation between Russia and the West in order to exert further control over Western decision-making and discourage the West from allowing Ukraine to use Western-provided weapons to strike military objects in Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Russia is preparing for potential strikes against Ukraine’s three remaining operational nuclear power plants ahead of the coming winter, highlighting the Kremlin's unwillingness to engage in good-faith negotiations and continued commitment to the destruction of the Ukrainian state and its people.

A Russian company is reportedly collaborating with entities in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) to develop an attack drone for Russia's war in Ukraine.

Russia continues to deepen its relationship with Iran's Axis of Resistance, this time reportedly via Iran-brokered talks facilitating Russian missile transfers to Yemen's Houthi rebels.

Neither Russian nor Ukrainian forces made confirmed advances in Kursk Oblast.

Ukrainian forces continued to regain positions in Vovchansk.

Russian forces advanced northwest of Kreminna, in Toretsk, and southeast of Pokrovsk.

Russian forces reportedly advanced within and around Vuhledar (southwest of Donetsk City) amid continued offensive efforts to seize the settlement.

Veterans of Russia's war in Ukraine continue to commit crimes upon returning to Russia.

That convoy towards Kyiv seemed like a menacing thing... until it just stalled.

Everyone remembers and talks about the convoy but how about the Russian soldiers who were digging in the dirt around Chernobyl

Trump says the quiet part out loud. You guys who thought he.would take a hard line against.Russia were projecting your own wishful thinking on to him. You can't say he didn't warn you.

quote:

Former President Donald Trump described Ukraine in bleak and mournful terms Wednesday, referring to its people as “dead” and the country itself as “demolished,” and further raising questions about how much the former president would be willing if elected again to concede in a negotiation over the country’s future.

Trump argued Ukraine should have made concessions to Russian President Vladimir Putin in the months before Russia’s February 2022 attack, declaring that even “the worst deal would’ve been better than what we have now.”

Trump, who has long been critical of U.S. aid to Ukraine, frequently claims that Russia never would have invaded if he was president and that he would put an end to the war if he returned to the White House. But rarely has he discussed the conflict in such detail.

His remarks, at a North Carolina event billed as an economic speech, come on the heels of a debate this month in which he pointedly refused to say whether he wanted Ukraine to win the war. On Tuesday, Trump touted the prowess of Russia and its predecessor Soviet Union, saying that wars are “what they do.”

Glad that you asked. America's top retired F16 ace said he'd like to volunteer.

“What deal can we make? It’s demolished, The people are dead. The country is in rubble.”

Did Zelensky bait him into just making his stance crystal clear, instead of letting people project what they wanted to believe onto his vagueness?

Zelensky's line about Biden is actually perfect;
"It seems he wants Ukraine to win, just not at the expense of Russia losing."

Doesn't sound like his heart was in that support and Johnson and others prodded him into it.

Trump laid blame for the conflict on President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, his Democratic rival in November. He said Biden “egged it all on” by pledging to help Ukraine defend itself rather than pushing it to cede territory to Russia.

“Biden and Kamala allowed this to happen by feeding Zelenskyy money and munitions like no country has ever seen before,”

My girlfriend is from Kiev. We haven’t talked about it, but I don’t think she has any desire to go back. That seems true for most of the people I’ve met and spoken with.

So Trump stated his war prevention strategy amounts to Ukraine making concessions to Russia.

It has nothing to do with Trump being tough on Putin. Putin can just stroke his belly and Trump will eat out his hand.

His former chief of staff, McMasters, said he would. Also, gave him credit for Ukraine having Javelins instead of just blankets That was a month ago
