Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov has been arrested in Paris. Durov has both Russian and French citizenship.
There's speculation that the arrest is due to Telegram's failures to cooperate with law enforcement in cases of drug and human trafficking.

If tweet fails to load, click here. Besides the direct impact on the armed forces of Russia, this has the potential to upend the entire system by which we gain knowledge about the war.

Russia using a tac nuke on its own soil would make NATO go balls deep? Why?
Russia using a tactical nuke on its own soil would make Russians go nuts...
Russia using one in Ukraine would make NATO retaliate. That was pointed out early on in the invasion.
NBC NEWS: U.S. Warns Russia of 'catastrophic' consequences if it uses nuclear weapons
Look what Ukraine has been able to do to Russian military bases and Russian infrastructure on its own with improvised drones.
I imagine what NATO, striking from Romania, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden and Finland could do in half a day... not troop incursions, just strikes that destroy military sites and equipment and planes, and then Russian submarines get destroyed by the naval vessels that stalk them...
Putin would have no military... and with no military, he's Saddam Hussein or Muammar Gaddafi and lots of people have scores to settle...

We've done this many times in this thread, but I suppose that we have to have the entire nuclear conversation all over again from the beginning at least every two months or so.
It's almost an unwritten rule of this thread.

A popular Russian channel says that Telegram is also used by Russian forces to communicate, and that if Western intelligence services gain access to it, they could obtain sensitive information about the Russian military. They also mention Discord.

I don't think we've ever gone over them using one on their own soil. That's what I was referring to. Not them using one on Ukraine.

This isn't hard.
A nuclear weapon used in the theater, whether over Russian or Ukrainian soil, is going to lead to a personal targeting of Vladimir Putin with a retaliatory strike. Which is why we've gone to such pains to leak to him that we knew when he was taking a piss. There's no possibility of 'fire and survive'.

The question I've been pondering....
Given their methods in Ukraine, are the russians willing to turn Sudzha and other towns into rubble in order to retake them?

That's the crux of the entire operation. Ryan McBeth says it best: "Don't create problems for your enemy. Create dilemmas."
Russia can basically ignore the Ukrainians and pretend it's no big deal. I think there was a Russian troll farm bot on here about a week ago who said the land Ukraine had taken "wasn't operationally significant to the war effort". That gives you some idea of their plan.
The only way they can dislodge the Ukrainians is to glide bomb the whole area into a hellscspe. And even then it would cost tens of thousands of casualties. That's a dilemma. But it's not even much of one. Even Russia won't do that to themselves.

Yes. They are already doing it (the rubble part, not the retaking part).

Russian history is built on doing fricked up shite to their own people.

Pretty common theme with most of humanity unfortunately. The Russians are old pros for sure

ISW Update Aug 24

Key Takeaways:
Ukrainian long-range strikes against Russian military targets within Russia’s rear are crucial for degrading Russian military capabilities throughout the theater, and the lifting of restrictions on Ukraine's use of Western-provided weapons would allow Ukrainian forces to strike a wide range of significant targets undergirding Russia’s war effort.
An unnamed senior Biden administration national security official reportedly stated that Ukrainian strikes with Western-provided weapons against targets within Russia would not be effective because the Russian military has redeployed military aircraft from Russian airbases near Ukraine — but this assessment ignores how Russian forces are leveraging sanctuary space in deep rear areas within Russia for a wide array of infrastructure besides airfields to support military operations against Ukraine.
The redeployment of Russian air assets from Russian air bases in range of ATACMS does not remove the utility of using ATACMS against other Russian military targets, however.
Ukrainian forces do not have to strike every single Russian military and paramilitary object in Russia within range of Western-provided weapons to start generating significant operational pressures on the Russian military.
Recent successful Ukrainian strikes against Russian military targets within ATACMS range with Ukraine’s own domestically produced precision weapons demonstrate that Ukraine still has a requirement to conduct strikes that lifting the US restrictions could help fill.
Some US officials assess that the Russian military will likely need to redeploy significant forces from Ukraine and/or operational reserves to repel Ukrainian forces from Russian territory.
Ukrainian forces continued offensive operations within their salient in Kursk Oblast on August 24, and neither Russian nor Ukrainian forces made any significant claimed advances.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky commented on some of the objectives of the Ukrainian operation into Kursk Oblast on August 24.
Ukraine and Russia conducted their first prisoner of war (POW) exchange since the Ukrainian incursion into Kursk Oblast.
Russian forces recently advanced near Toretsk and Pokrovsk.
Kursk Oblast officials announced the creation of the BARS-Kursk volunteer detachment on August 24 and stated that the detachment will fight solely within Kursk Oblast.

Worth noting that this is the first day of the Kursk operation without confirmed Ukrainian advances.

Probably time to dig in if they intend to stay and try and solidify their supply lines.

russian military personnel remain at the aggregate plant in Vovchansk. They have been blocked for several months.
This was reported by the spokesman of the operative-tactical group "Kharkiv" Vitalii Sarantsev.
"At the very beginning, there were about 40 servicemen there. They suffer losses there. They have both dead and wounded. There are wounded lying down, there are wounded who are capable of fighting. A certain number of them remain there, I cannot give an exact number to say for certain reasons," Sarantsev said.
