It was clear from yesterday's Washington Post article that Sudzha is still very much in range for Russian drones.

Pushing east helps a lot with that.

Newest Financial Times report has this fascinating bit:

quote:

The Centre for Defence Strategies, a Kyiv-based security think-tank, said in an assessment overnight that Ukraine’s 103rd Territorial Defense Brigade had captured the village of Vnezapnoye and encircled Russian FSB border troops near Glushkovo.

The CDS said Ukrainian forces had seized control of “Tolpyno and Kolychevka, cutting off the Russian garrison in Korenevo from the main enemy forces”.

They also “captured Aleksandrovka and used it as a hub for deep raids towards Lgov and Rylsk”, deeper into Kursk region.

Color me just a bit skeptical about Tolpyno and Kolychevka, as there have been other recent reports that there is still fighting in Olgovka. But perhaps they have bypassed those areas by moving north and west, and then closing off Korenevo.

I hope it's true. I've been expecting the fall of Korenevo for several days.

This is the Lithuanian ambassador to Sweden. He apparently agrees.

British Defence Intelligence
INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 19 August 2024

On 09 August 2024, Russian media reported that the Russian Federal telecommunications regulator Roskomnadzor has blocked the encrypted messaging app Signal from use in the country. The official justification is that this is to 'prevent the use of the messenger for extremist or terrorist purposes.

Some commentators have suggested that the ban is intended to prevent the spread of information about the Ukrainian incursion into Kursk oblast, but this is highly unlikely.

Signal is used by many independent Russian journalists and opposition activists to evade the Russian government's pervasive system of electronic monitoring, most notably the FSB's System of Operational Investigative Measures (SORM). In this context the restriction on Telegram is likely intended to increase the ability of the Russian authorities to monitor and restrict the communications of private citizens hostile to the regime.

This comes at a time when the Russian Government is proscribing independent media organisations, and disrupting YouTube and the messaging service WhatsApp; measures intended to increase government control over access to media and information in Russia.

It was really dumb to hold Ukraine aid hostage to try and force an end to Biden's open border.

If the ultimate result mattered to Republicans in Congress (who know more than we do about Ukraine’s actual prospects and the consequences of them “losing”) it wouldn’t have been held hostage. They valued the upholding narrative (which is sometimes true) that Republicans put America first. That was consistent with that narrative, just not good for Ukraine.

That's all Obama did publicly... behind the scenes he provided Ukraine with military aid (or rather, just out of making it a headline pushed at press conferences), despite the GOP talking point that people have accepted as gospel... they were trying to keep Putin on point for the Iran non-nuke deal.

Libya coup and war
Syria failed coup and war

He also publicly said Russia will always have escalation advantage over Ukraine and that it’s not really important to US interests.

Looks like that tank farm is still on fire in Rostov. Standard API tank sizes puts this terminal at over 1.5 million barrels. GOST standards are going to be similar in sizes. Reports show that more tanks have caught fire.

Those kinds of things go on all over the world all the time. It's really not to the credit or fault of an American president.

What's important is that he didn't pull a GWB and invade the universe

I'm still wondering where the citizens of Kursk are with personal weapons like those who came out of the woodworks in Ukraine in Feb 2022.

I saw a report that the evacuated had the young men separated and impressed into the Russian army. Still very different than Ukrainians lining up to get AK's.

Surprisingly, gun crime has not increased in Ukraine in the 2 years since Ukraine changed it laws to allow citizens to carry guns in public and handed out fully automatic weapons.

Oh no. It looks like Russia destroyed a dummy instead of an actual 3rd HIMARs.

To me the population decline will be one of the longer lasting negative impacts for Russia. Between Covid and this war, Russia is now on year 5 of population decline. Russia isn’t exactly the kind of country that can smooth over declining birth rates through immigration and assimilation like we can.

Take with a grain of salt, but the year over year Russian birth rate decline since 2020:

2020: -2.310%
2021: -2.370%
2022: -2.420%
2023: -2.480%
2024: TBD
