We didn’t jump into that until we were actually attacked

WW2 and this conflict are nothing alike. Nothing.

ISW Update

quote:

Key Takeaways:

The US House of Representatives passed a supplemental appropriations bill on April 20 providing for roughly $60 billion of assistance to Ukraine. The bill must now be passed by the Senate and signed by the president before aid can begin to flow.

These requirements and the logistics of transporting US materiel to the frontline in Ukraine will likely mean that new US assistance will not begin to affect the situation on the front line for several weeks. The frontline situation will therefore likely continue to deteriorate in that time, particularly if Russian forces increase their attacks to take advantage of the limited window before the arrival of new US aid.

Ukrainian forces may suffer additional setbacks in the coming weeks while waiting for US security assistance that will allow Ukraine to stabilize the front, but they will likely be able to blunt the current Russian offensive assuming the resumed US assistance arrives promptly.

Russian forces will likely intensify ongoing offensive operations and missile and drone strikes in the coming weeks in order to exploit the closing window of Ukrainian materiel constraints.

Ukraine will likely be in a significantly improved operational position by June 2024 regardless of delays in the arrival of US security assistance to the frontline, and the Russian military command will likely consider significant changes to the large-scale offensive operation that it is expected to launch in June, although it may still proceed as planned.

The likely resumption of US security assistance to Ukraine is a critical turning point in the war in Ukraine, but the Kremlin, the West, and Ukraine still have additional decisions to make that will determine the character and outcome of the fighting.

Ukrainian forces reportedly conducted successful drone strikes against several energy infrastructure facilities and a fuel storage facility within Russia on the night of April 19 to 20.

The Kremlin appears to be censoring demands for an investigation into the reported murder of a former Donetsk People Republic (DNR) serviceman amid a wider trend of the Kremlin coopting or otherwise censoring DNR-affiliated voices within the Russian information space.

Russian forces recently made confirmed advances near Chasiv Yar (west of Bakhmut) and northwest of Avdiivka, and Ukrainian forces recently made confirmed advances south of Kreminna.

Ukrainian and Russian sources reported that Russian forces are using US-made 203mm artillery ammunition that Russia may have received from Iran.

It's wild that people think $14 billion or whatever Ukraine is getting in military aid is actually going to stop Russia. Unless it includes about 500,000 trained soldiers, it's not going to make any meaningful difference in the outcome.

They will be begging for a new round of funding/aid in 60 days. So heroic of our "wartime speaker"

And there’s no way the Ukes could blow it up?

The Russians are currently using the road network through Zaporizhzhia to keep Crimea supplied.

Ukraine can damage the rail line with long range weapon systems, but they’re not going to destroy it, so the end result will be its operating, but at lower capacity due to occasional outages.

The Russians still have rail troops who are trained for this.

I said after 1945. My point tgst there have been no WWs after that time went right over your head.

Largely because Russia knows that they can’t repeat what they did in 1939 without the US coming down on them hard.

I was thinking the same thing. I’d like to see Russia rush into a set trap of some sorts around May 1st.

I love the movie the Bridge Over the River Kwai.

How many bridges involved in this new rail line?

I wish we could throw in Dementia Joe and his merry band of idiots in this aid deal.

I would then have some hope that it would make a difference. We could at least see some benefit from it.

He certainly has gained a lot of support and respect in DC over the last two weeks.

And all it took was completely selling out and lining everyone else’s pockets. Bravo, sir

How did he sell out? The bill was mostly about munitions factories with many in GOP congressional districts. Then again, you seem to be for the Clinton and Obama policies which drastically reduced the defense industry. Nice showing your leftist colors but then again, that's nothing new.

The GOP is never building the wall, nor securing our border

They are chanting for Ukraine while our own country is being forced to allow millions of unknowns into the country.

I’ve never been more convinced that we are in the “looting the treasury” phase of collapse.

Red state governors should respond by beginning the deportation of illegals immediately.

It's insane how many simps and chicken hawks in our own party support this lunacy (and I include Israel and Palestinian funding in this as well). Infuriating.

In Russia, the military mistook a local resident for a "saboteur", beat him up, and tried to tear off his ear - RusNews

The victim Ruslan wanted to run his motorcycle before the season on the road near the military airfield, arrived at the place, saw no traces of motorcycles, and left.

On the way back, the driver was stopped by armed soldiers, confiscated the motorcycle, and taken to the headquarters. The military accused the man of espionage, saying that near the airfield they found some snacked wire, and in Ruslan's phone - a subscription to a Ukrainian Telegram channel.

According to the victim, he was beaten and tried to tear off his ear with pliers.

Last April 19, the Azeri and Armenian sides agreed on the establishment of defined borders for the first time since the end of the Cold War. The agreements satisfy Azerbaijan's claims and will allow the consolidation of control over Qizilhacili, Baganis Ayrim, Kheyrimli and Asagi ?skipara (the last two abandoned for thirty years). The new agreement has generated tensions between the inhabitants of these localities and the Armenian authorities. According to the government of Nikol Pashinyan, the agreement will reduce the chances of an attack by Azerbaijan. However, this is only a small border settlement which is far from satisfying Baku's territorial claims, so the Turkic country will continue its pressures with the same intensity, a strategy which is proving beneficial to its interests

Russia to maximize the intensity of strikes on Ukraine until the arrival of F-16s - speaker of the AFU Yevlash

He noted that the occupiers will try to hit critical infrastructure and energy as much as possible, and the enemy still has quite a few missiles that are used against Ukraine right after coming off the assembly line.

INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 21 April 2024

On 14 April 2024, Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief General Syrskyi stated Russian forces intend to take Chasiv Yar in eastern Ukraine by 09 May 2024, the date of Russia's Victory Day celebrations. Syrskyi stated that Chasiv Yar is a preliminary step towards the larger city of Kramatorsk.

On 18 April 2024, Ukrainian Khortytsia Operational Strategic Group of Forces commander noted Russian Air Force dropping 20-30 munitions per day. These are likely discharged by Russian Su-25 aircraft operating close to the line of contact and Su-34 operating at a stand-off distance using glide bombs. This is a concerted aerial bombardment and is a tactic repeated from the Avdiivka campaign.

Chasiv Yar town is heavily defended and situated on high ground. Russian ground forces have made only slow progress in the area.

He is the Republican speaker of the house. Support for Ukraine aid nationwide is only around 50%, much lower than that among republicans. As speaker he is supposed to guide policy to be in line with what the voters want. This is especially true in the House.

But I’m sure he will do some things Republican voters actually largely support to save face before he has to face a ballot box again.
