Medvedev is most likely going to be the main guy when Putin passes away, so NATO hoping to just ‘wait it out’ on Putin won’t work either.
Medvedev likes the alcohol. He is Putin's shite talker. He plays a certain role. He was once considered a liberal but since the war he has taken on a nationalistic/anti-west role. He was actually demoted in 2020 to deputy head of the security council. He is not one of the three or four that Putin really listens to.
Patrushev is the dangerous one. Very, very hawkish. Hardliner with a capital H. Probably the most dangerous man in Russia. Many of Putin's hardline beliefs were adopted from this guy. Many consider him the heir apparent in the short term.
Alexei Dyumin is another one to keep an eye on in regards to a potential Putin successor. Putin installed him as the governor of the Tula region. Very loyal to Putin and he has benefited greatly as a result. Putin really likes this guy and trusts him. He would be considered an outsider. Many see him as a successor to ShoIgu if Putin ever gets rid of him. Many think that he was responsible for orchestrating the escape of Yanukovych during Maidan for Putin.

Correct, no 1 weapon will change the entire strategic situation on the battlefield but they can have a large effect on logistics and command/control which creates chaos. Chaos is exactly what Ukraine needs to inflict on the Russians. Keep them guessing. As far as weaponry I honestly don’t care to see another western MBT sent to Ukraine until there is an at least decent defense against drones because they will just be hit every time they come out. Give Ukraine all the land mines, RPGs, artillery shells and trench digging equipment from every corner of the earth no matter how small or shitty and send it to the Ukrainians. This is all before the actual shell production in the U.S. and Europe. Pakistan has large stocks of weapons that can be bought by a 3rd party and sent. South Korea too. India is the big one. If they can start getting ammunition from them then things start to even out between the two sides.
As far as our own equipment, send as many old Bradleys as we can afford to send without hurting our own capabilities which should easily be at least 100 more. They have really done great things with the Bradley. Then as you were saying and I’ve been screaming forever it seems now start training Ukrainian helicopter pilots on Super Cobras and twin Hueys for frick sake! They are newly retired and would take minimal work to have them ready to go again and would give Ukraine a formidable helicopter fleet of all kinds from Mi-8/17 to Mi-24s, Sea Kings for transport, twin Hueys for all purpose and Super Cobras for attack to go with the incoming F-16s. I really hope Sweden comes through with the Gripen too but there just isn’t many of them so i’m not sure if I’d hold my breath on that one. After the war though Ukraine should adopt the Gripen as its primary multi role fighter and order 60 or so brand new from the factory which Sweden would love because they are losing contracts to the F-35 in lots of countries. Lastly, EW has to improve. If Ukraine can find an answer to the Lancet then Russia would take a gigantic hit.

I dedicate this meme to the many posters in this thread who chose to side with Hillary, McCain, Zelenskyy, Biden, Clapper, Brennan, French, Kristol, Nuland, and Kagan over Trump....
Shame on you, but it's not too late to do the right thing and support the wholesome America First movement over the evils of Globalism.

It's a tough problem to solve. Cope cages might work somewhat if done right. Most drones are small and don't carry a big payload, but they are fast, often cheap and harder to detect. The Ukrainians target the back of the Russian turret where it meets the chassis. That may be where the Abrams have been hit.
There are a bunch of anti-drone systems being tested and developed, but it's been 2 years since this became a clear threat.

And if the Western countries actually want to help Ukraine, they should put their efforts into finding a way to broker peace.
The two accepting the current borders as they exist on the battlefield and Ukraine being given a route to joining NATO and the EU? Ok
If it's where Russia gets to annex every territory it simply claims and then the West has to leave and we have some 1990s esque "mutual security" infrastructure bullshite? Lol

Unfortunately the defense against drones is probably going to be one of those things that will have to be figured out by trial and error in the field. Ukraine has roughly 1700 MBTs right now per wikipedia. That is enough to hold the line, but it will need more to if they want to take their land back. That is also going to take time. The NATO nations that operate Leopard 2s can't really dig into their storage depos and send tanks to Ukraine without weakening NATO. Unless Ukraine is able to purcahse Soviet designed tanks from a country like Egypt which has 900 T62s and T55s in storage then M1 is the only tank that exists in numbers. It took 8 months to get the first M1s to Ukraine. The USA needs to start work on repairing the tanks and training the crews and support staff on them.

Bingo.

Sweden promised to send Gripens after officially joining NATO. It has been training Ukrainian pilots on the Gripen since October of last year. They have not said how many Sweden will send but I am going to guess that it will be around 12. Not a lot but every little bit helps.

EW has to improve.
That one is going to be tough. We like to laugh at Russia be forced to use telegram messages carried across the Ukrainian cell network to communicate but the Ukrainians are in the same boat except they mostly use WhatsApp. Neither side can do what the US did in Afghanistan to counter IEDs and just take the cell network offline. I hope the Pentagon has some "top men" working on the problem because I have no idea how you fix that.

Isreal's Trophy APS is designed to protect the top of a tank unlike Russia's APS. It has proven to be fairly successfull in protecting Israeli tanks from Hama. However, the drones Hamas has are not as advanced as Russia's Lancet drone. Ukraine had good success with jammers on their soviet era tanks. My buddy in Ukraine says the jammers work if someone spots the drone and the tank(s) turn on the jammers just long enough to change positions and prevent the drones from following them. They cannot leave them on for long because once the Russians pick up the signals from the jammers it is like saying "Here I am. Russian artillery please shoot me."

ISW Update

Key Takeaways:
Russian Security Council Deputy Chairperson Dmitry Medvedev promoted Russia’s extensive territorial objectives that expand deep into Ukraine’s territory.
The Ukrainian Main Military Intelligence Directorate (GUR) reported that unknown actors detonated explosives and severely damaged a Russian railway bridge over the Chapaevka River near Chapaevsk, Samara Oblast on March 4.
Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly awarded a Russian Airborne Forces (VDV) and Spetsnaz-affiliated Russian milblogger, likely as part of the Kremlin’s longstanding efforts to co-opt milbloggers and make them loyal to the Kremlin.
The Russian government reportedly hid data on recipients of social support services in 2022, likely to obfuscate casualties suffered in the first year of the war in Ukraine or to cover up the government’s inability to pay promised social support to vulnerable populations.
The Kremlin is continuing efforts to ensure high voter turnout in the upcoming presidential election to present the guise of legitimacy and widespread popular support among Russian President Vladimir Putin’s domestic electorate.
Russian authorities continue to exploit the leaked recording of German military officers discussing the theoretical provision of Taurus missiles to Ukraine to deter Western military aid provisions to Ukraine.
Russian forces recently made confirmed advances near Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Donetsk City amid continued positional engagements along the entire frontline.
A Russian news aggregator claimed on March 4 that Russian forces replaced Storm-Z convict units with Storm-V units, a mechanism for distributing convicts into the regular Russian military as opposed to keeping them siloed within convict-only units, as was the case with Storm-Z formations.
