Do you have friends in the Ukrainian military who are fighting in Ukraine? Do you personally know anyone who has died in the war fighting for Ukraine? Fwiw to the extent that Russians are allowed to criticize Putin one of the things often said on their telegram channels and other social media is that it was actually Russia that messed up by not going all the way in 2015. If you remember the Battle of Debaltseve and a few other major fights back then, the Ukrainians were a mess, the separatists were doing well and the Russian army likely could have taken everything east of the Dnieper. They didn't, instead they entered the Minsk agreement and let the Ukr army get western funding, training and weapons for almost a decade. Then they invaded and we've seen the result.

I don’t think there is any litmus test anymore. If you got 5 of them in a room and ask what their specific policy points are to be a republican and pressed for specifics, you’d end up with 8 different answers.
