A50 is Russian AWACs and the IL-22 is an airborne command post. Super high value strategic targets. Russia has only a handful of each.

There's too much Russian chatter about it now for there to be nothing. Something happened in the air above the Sea of Azov.

Lots of Confusion from Ukrainian Sources regarding possibly Two Incidents which have occurred tonight over the Sea of Avov, with Initial Reports stating that Ukrainian Air Defenses had Downed a A-50U Airborne Early Warning and Control Aircraft as well as an Il-22 Signal-Intelligence Platform, however according to several Sources with the Russian Air Force a possible Friendly Fire Incident did occur with a Il-22 near Crimea and the Aircraft was able to Successful Land back at an Airfield, but that No Incident had occurred involving a A-50.

Taking out an A-50 is the highest military target Ukraine can possibly hope to destroy. They matter so so so much to Russian fighters helping them see much further like our AWACS aircraft help ours. Also it looks like Ukraine received ARAT-1 explosive armor for their battalion of M1A1 Abrams.

UPDATE: The strike on the Russian IL-22M Mission Command aircraft was preceded by an air raid alert over the Kerch Bridge. Probability that the aircraft was shot down by Russia's own air defense is now quite high.

There's now a consensus coming out: the A-50 was shot down, and the IL-22 was severely damaged but managed to land. Here's the big Russian channel Two Majors:

FighterBomber has now posted the first photo of the damaged IL-22:

That thing is scrap.

Russian channels are still saying that it was a friendly fire accident. Ukrainian sources are claiming that they shot the planes down.

There's increasing speculation that Ukraine could have pushed a Patriot system right up to the front line in order to get the range to shoot down these high-value targets.

We have to keep in mind that, while Russia does the opposite, US defense companies often understate the capabilities of our weapons.

From HUR's Vadym Skibitsky:
-Russia produced ~2 million 122mm/152mm artillery rounds in 2023 and received 1 million 122mm/152mm rounds from North Korea
-Russia produces ~115-130 "strategic" (>350km range) missiles per month
-~330-350 Shahed drones can be produced per month

He notes that actual production of Shaheds and missiles each month varies due to parts.
-Russia can produce 100-115 operational-tactical class of missiles (e.g. Kh-31, Kh-59) per month
-He says ~4% of Shahed drones fail to launch or explode immediately

-Russia can produce 100-115 operational-tactical class of missiles (e.g. Kh-31, Kh-59) per month

Compared to last year, Russia's missile campaign this winter hasn't focused on energy infrastructure, but instead primarily on other infrastructure like Ukraine's defense industry and C2. He says Russia has started to use Shahed drones against military targets at the front.

He says ~1,000-1,100 Russians join the military every day, and they are used to replace losses and form reserve regiments. He doesn't specify what percentage of them come from mobilization or volunteers, but he says the salary is the key motivation for those volunteering.

He says former members of Wagner have signed contracts with different PMCs under the command of the Russian MoD or Rosgvardia in Ukraine or in Africa and the Middle East. He also says Iran hopes to receive Su-34 bombers from Russia.

He says almost 80% of the components Russia receives, especially for electronics, comes from China and that most of these aren't even produced in China. As a result, he says it isn't that much of a problem for Russia to find the necessary components

"Immediately?" does that mean the operator has a 1 in 25 chance of being blown up at launch?

The pro-Russian ppl on X are saying that Ukrainian special forces snuck over 100 km behind enemy lines and took out the A50. Personally I think it is less embarrassing to just blame it on the Patriot missile but I guess the Russians can't admit that since they have claimed to have destroyed all the Patriot batteries in Ukraine.

British Defence Intelligence
INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
UPDATE ON UKRAINE
15 January 2024

On 11 January 2023, Russian Deputy Chair of the Security Council, Dmitri Medvedev, stated that 500,000 people had joined the Russian armed forces in 2023. It is highly likely that this figure has been substantially inflated.

In its efforts to meet recruitment targets, the Russian military has since April 2023 allowed school-leavers to sign contracts with the Russian army. Recent data published by Mediazona and the BBC Russian Service suggests that at least five Russians born in 2005 have died in the conflict.

It is highly likely that Russian military recruitment to sustain the war has disproportionately drawn from impoverished and rural regional communities of Russia.

That would be 0.04% of the Russian population. That's comically low but typical for Russian government information.

TOW's cannot be fired with great success on the move. AP selection was good by gunner crew.
