The world's best SPG, the Swedish Archer, has finally made it to Ukraine. The Archer has the same extra-long range as the Caesar, but the crew doesn't need to leave the cab to fire.

Unfortunately, this is also one more occasion of promised equipment taking a long time to get delivered.

EDIT: Image won't post, for some reason.

Absolutely. I remember looking into those when I heard they were sending some to Ukraine. That seems like forever ago now.

The US didn't announce that we were sending this. It was undoubtedly included under "mine-clearing equipment."

So, Russia apparently felt nostalgic for last winter's disastrous attacks at Vuhledar. They've done it again. Just massive losses. Here's Andrew's preliminary count from some of the videos that came out today:

Most of the reported damage is from drones. That's really going to change the concept of warfare going forward.

Drones costing a few hundred per unit destroying armor costing millions has changed the equation.

The solution is going to be electromagnetic jamming plus a return of light flak guns. You're already seeing some of that. Small drones aren't powerful enough to carry sufficient electromagnetic shielding. The counter to that is going to be even smaller, less observable drones. Which will work for spotting artillery fire but not so much for direct attack against hardened targets like tanks.

We’ve had those in Louisiana now for years. We call them mosquitoes.

They will also be smarter. If jammed they will be able to hunt independently (AI mode).

The equipment Ukraine has isn't going to break through.

That is true but it’s not what the experts were saying 6 months ago. The experts expected Ukraine’s western equipment to walk through the Russian defenses. Unfortunately Ukraine believed the experts and we have seen the results. Now the experts are expecting the arrival of F16s to change everything and not be as vulnerable to Russian air defenses as Ukraine’s migs. Luckily it appears that Ukraine is not listening to the experts and doing everything it can to degrade the Russian air defenses prior to the arrival of F16s so that the F16s can have maximum impact when they arrive.

Drone usage is the big new takeaway from this conflict but the one that militaries around the world have largely ignored forever is engineering assets. No Western country has the amount of mine-countermine assets for example. There was concern about Iraq's "million mine minefield" leading up to ODS and it would have been a clusterfrick had it actually existed. While it would have been mainly a time suck due to having air supremacy it should have sounded the warning bell that was clanging hard within the ranks of Engineer units. Maybe it will be different with drones but engineering assets just aren't "cool".

ISW Update

Russian forces conducted a notably larger series of drone strikes throughout Ukraine on November 3. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russian forces launched four dozen Shahed-131/-136 drones from Kursk Oblast and Primorsko-Akhtarsk, Krasnodar Krai, and a Kh-59 cruise missile from occupied Kherson Oblast at targets in Ukraine.[1] The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Ukrainian air defenses shot down the Kh-59 cruise missile and 24 of the Shahed drones.[2] Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukrainian forces intercepted over half of the roughly 40 drones that Russian forces launched at Ukraine.

The US Department of Defense (DoD) announced new military aid packages to Ukraine on November 3, primarily aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s air defenses. The US DoD announced an aid package of military materiel support for Ukraine valued at $125 million, including munitions for National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) and HIMARS; 155mm and 105mm artillery rounds; Tube-Launched, Optically-Tracked, Wire-Guided (TOW) anti-tank missiles; Javelin and AT-4 anti-armor systems; and over three million rounds of small arms ammunition and grenades.[8] The US DoD will also allocate $300 million to the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses over the long term. The US DoD will provide Ukraine laser-guided munitions to counter UAVs under USAI.

Ukrainian forces continued offensive operations near Bakhmut and in western Zaporizhia Oblast on November 3. The Ukrainian General Staff reported that Ukrainian forces continued offensive operations in the Bakhmut and Melitopol (western Zaporizhia Oblast) directions.[9] The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) claimed that Russian forces repelled eight Ukrainian assaults in western Zaporizhia Oblast and several Ukrainian attacks near Bakhmut from October 28 to November 3.[10]

Russian milbloggers continued to criticize the Russian military command for failing to establish long-term training capabilities because it is keeping skilled commanders and soldiers at the front and leaving inexperienced careerists to train new recruits and officers. One Russian milblogger claimed that Russia continues to only learn from its mistakes at the cost of significant losses and that the Russian military command fails to teach effective tactics employed by competent commanders and servicemen to new personnel

Alleged long-time allies of Russian President Vladimir Putin are reportedly financing two Russian Ministry of Defense–subordinated private military companies that have subsumed former Wagner Group operations in Africa. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on November 3 that the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD), including Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yunus-Bek Yevkurov and members of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces (GRU), is continuing efforts to subsume Wagner Group activities in Africa under the MoD-subordinated Redut and Convoy private military companies (PMCs)

Wagner elements in Syria will reportedly transfer Russian Pantsir-S1 air defense systems that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has agreed to provide to Iranian-backed Lebanese Hezbollah. (NOTE: This text also appeared in the Critical Threats Project’s (CTP) November 3 Iran Update) CNN reported on November 3 that two people familiar with US intelligence stated that Assad agreed to provide the Russian air defense systems to Hezbollah and tasked Wagner with their delivery during joint conversations between the three actors.[16] WSJ reported on November 2 that US intelligence indicated that Wagner itself would give the Russian air defense systems to Hezbollah.

Dagestani officials claimed they would punish those who participate in and organize alleged future demonstrations, in contrast to calls for leniency for those participating in the October 29 antisemitic riots. The office of the Mayor of Makhachkala called on local residents to refrain from participating in unauthorized rallies, including one allegedly planned for November 5, and preemptively threatened that participants and "those who provoke the population” will face “serious consequences.”[21] Russian milbloggers similarly claimed that Telegram channels continue to call on Dagestani residents to attend a November 5 demonstration to demand the release of those detained for the October 29 antisemitic riots.[22] A Russian milblogger continued to criticize the weak official response to the recent riots, stating that “to have mercy means to show weakness.”[23]

Chechen Republic Head Ramzan Kadyrov’s continued appeals to Chechen nationalists likely aim to solidify domestic support without disrupting his appearance as a steadfast supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Kadyrov announced on November 3 that Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin signed a decree assigning original Chechen names to eight Chechen villages that suffered from Stalin-era deportations and that Soviet authorities disbanded

Russian forces conducted offensive operations along the Kupyansk-Svatove-Kreminna line, near Bakhmut, near Avdiivka, west and southwest of Donetsk City, near Vuhledar, in the Donetsk-Zaporizhia Oblast border area, and in western Zaporizhia Oblast and advanced in some areas.

Kremlin-affiliated milbloggers began advertising recruitment into an “elite regiment” in Moscow Oblast and offering recruits one-million-ruble (about $10,900) salaries.

Kremlin-appointed Children’s Rights Commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova continued attempts to discredit information about Russia’s deportation of Ukrainian children.

British Defence Intelligence
INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 04 November

Over the past three weeks, Russia has likely lost around 200 armoured vehicles during its assaults on the Donbas town of Avdiivka. This is likely due to a combination of relative effectiveness of Ukraine's modern hand-held anti-armour weapons, mines, uncrewed aerial vehicle-dropped munitions, and precision artillery systems.

In response, Russian forces have highly likely switched to conducting dismounted infantry-based assaults in this sector. Ukrainian forces faced similar tactical challenges as the attacking force over the summer.

Like previous Russian offensives, the Avdiivka assaults have often been characterised by advances across open ground, leading to high losses. It is plausible that Russia has suffered several thousand personnel casualties around the town since the start of October 2023. Russia's leadership continues to demonstrate a willingness to accept heavy personnel losses for marginal territorial gains.

#Ukraine's need for deep-strike capability remains urgent. The U.S. has an arsenal of ATACMS and a hot production line to backfill them. It's time the Biden Admin finish the job on ATACMS.

There are explosions reported in the Kerch area of Crimea. I'm looking forward to seeing more info.

EDIT: still from a video of explosion in the dry docks of Kerch.

Yes. No reason not to give Ukraine these DEFENSIVE weapons.

Ukraine needs equipment that lets them hit Russians with minimal risk of being hit themselves. Only by maintaining a healthy k:d do they have any hope of survival as a state.

And it's long past time to take the restrictions off and let Ukraine strike targets inside Russia.

There are reports that the target in Kerch was the Russian corvette "Askold", and that it took three hits. This is a ship that can fire Kalibr and Onyx missiles.

The attack was presumably done with Storm Shadow/SCALP missiles, though there are reports that Ukraine also used drones to distract Russian air defense.
