The EU or Europe should be 100% funding this war and providing necessary arms. They already build all kinds of cool heavy weaponry tanks, missiles etc but we all know why this can't be the case because with Afghanistan gone we needed another money maker $$ for the elite.

For those screaming that Ukraine would lead to world War 3, I haven't heard a peep about Niger

ISW Update

Key Takeaways:

The Wagner Group continues to maintain a presence at facilities in Belarus and the status of its rumored withdrawal to Russia remains unclear.

Wagner Group financier Yevgeny Prigozhin has yet to comment on these speculations either directly or through intermediary sources as he has done previously, suggesting that Prigozhin may not be entirely at liberty to comment on the future of Wagner.

Ukrainian forces continued counteroffensive operations on at least three sectors of the front and advanced in the Donetsk-Zaporizhia Oblast border area on August 10.

A Russian milblogger accused Russian military personnel of fabricating or embellishing claims of Russian forces destroying Ukrainian vehicles in Ukraine.

Russian forces conducted another series of missile and drone strikes in Ukraine overnight on August 9-10.

The Kremlin is likely attempting to crypto-nationalize Russian internet giant Yandex to strengthen control over the Russian information space in preparation for the 2024 Russian presidential election.

The possible transfer of Yandex to affiliates of Russian First Deputy Presidential Chief of Staff Sergey Kiriyenko suggests that Putin seeks to reward Kiriyenko for his personal loyalty, particularly following the June 24 Wagner Group rebellion.

Affiliates of arrested former Federal Security Service (FSB) officer and ardent ultranationalist Igor Girkin continue to explicitly attack the Kremlin on August 10.

Russian forces conducted offensive operations along the Kupyansk-Svatove-Kreminna line, near Bakhmut, along the Avdiivka-Donetsk City line, the western Donetsk-eastern Zaporizhia Oblast border area, and in western Zaporizhia Oblast on August 10 and made some advances.

Ukrainian forces continued counteroffensive operations on at least three sectors of the front and advanced in the western Donetsk-eastern Zaporizhia Oblast border area on August 10.

Russian officials continue to highlight the claimed success of the Russian defense industrial base (DIB).

A Ukrainian military official reported that Russian forces are co-opting civilian infrastructure for the repression of local populations in the occupied territories.

Meh. Ukraine was part of the USSR for 75 years and the USA prospered during that time. If Ukraine falls, it will not affect the US one iota.

Don't know if anyone is following the Ruble valuation, but it's now in the top 3 weakest currency in the world this year due to the devaluation over the past 8 months.

Yes I have been keeping an eye on it. Russia had a significant cash surplus prior to the war which would have covered most of their losses from sanctions until early 2023.

Back in his state address in February Putin had talked about Russia still having economic growth but only up until Q2, beyond that he did not talk about the economy. I felt at the time that this was an indicator when Russia was likely to start really feeling the effects of the sanctions if they were not relaxed before then.

In April per the below article Russias economy ministry lowered its ruble rate forecast to the U.S. dollar for '23 and '24 to 76.5 and 76.8 from 68.3 and 70.9 respectively.
https://www.reuters.com/markets/europe/russian-economy-ministry-improves-2023-gdp-growth-forecast-2023-04-14/

If the current downward trend continues then the end of year will see it well past that forecast and in the face of shrinking exports and growing imports it does not bode well for the Russian economy.

It will be interesting to see the effect this will have on their predictions for GDP growth in the same article where they projected 1.2% growth up from a -0.8% contraction. Among various analytical entities they had a forecast between -0.2% to 0.5% as recently as July.

Europe has been nearly 80 years without a major war. The world was past major powers attacking a neighbor for territorial conquest. Feb 2022 changed that. China is watching the wests reactions. If Russia wins, China will be embolden. If they lose then China will think again

I would think that most people with any kind of compassion would not want an aggressor with a penchant fir invading their neighbors to profit from their actions. I would think that most people would hope that one day the aggressor would get bitch slapped.

But that’s just me.

This is reportedly the Olenegorsky Gornyak in drydock. Any military types able to comment on whether this looks like a one or two stage detonation?

To my eyes it looks like it penetrated a significant portion of the hull, though I understand landing class ships are primarily a floating garage with a large empty space within the hull

Zelensky wasn’t a part of the Burisma deal.
Biden needs to be run out of office.
I’m 71 years old and all my adult life my tax dollars have been used to defer Russian aggression.

Today my tax dollars in the Reagan tradition are going to help bleed Russia out. I see that is a good thing. We just need to keep enough to use against China.

Conflicting claims on what is happening around Kupyansk.

Claims that both Syn'kivka and Kyslivka have fallen to Russian troops are simply untrue

This is absolute bullshite.

Remember, we're at about 9 weeks of Pentagon spending for completely dismembering the offensive capability of one of our intractable global foes for the last century, for another generation-- and most of it in the form of materials we were in the proces of writing off because the replacements were budgeted for and begun under the last Trump defense appropriations act.

When you spend $6.27 *trillion* dollars and scream poverty over the cost of something already largely accounted for in spending --- and one of the very few legitimate mandates for spending (national defense), you are just showing profound intellectual dishonesty

We have rarely ever spent a fraction so efficiently. Less than 3 months of national defense budget decapitating an aspiring rival.
