The coup in Niger is an attempt at duplicating what happened in Mali a year and a half ago.

Mali had a very similar coup and the French said “that’s cool, just have elections soon,” to which the Malians replied “frick off.” Then the French said “well if you don’t we’re leaving.” And Mali said “cool, GTFO.” So the French GTFO and Mali brought in Wagner and the French moved their troops to Niger.

It’s worth being noted that the US has a fairly large military presence in Niger. Ive lived in Niamey for the past 5 years until I finally moved on in February to brighter pastures. I lived through a different coup about 2 years ago but that one failed, probably just theater to be honest.

My current intel says that as of now it’s business as usual in the capital. We’ll see if the military officers who overthrew the president will turn to the west or Wagner for help. My guess is it will be whomever offers the most money.

ETA: I actually started a thread on this yesterday. LINK

Politico:

U.S. expects to begin delivering Abrams tanks to Ukraine in September

quote:

U.S. Abrams tanks are likely to arrive on the Ukrainian battlefield in September, according to six people familiar with the planning, as Kyiv’s forces push to retake territory in a counteroffensive that is picking up steam.

The plan is to send a handful of Abrams tanks to Germany in August, where they will undergo final refurbishments. Once that process is complete, the first batch of Abrams will be shipped to Ukraine the following month.
quote:

The potential August and September deliveries mark the most specific time frame provided for when America’s main battle tank is expected to roll onto the battlefield. Pentagon officials have previously said the Abrams would be in Ukrainian hands sometime in the fall.

The U.S. is sending older M1A1 models instead of the more modern A2 version, which would have taken a year to get to Ukraine.

The six people — a Defense Department official, a U.S. official, an industry official, a congressional aide and two others familiar with the discussions — were all granted anonymity to discuss sensitive plans that have yet to be announced.
quote:

The initial batch will involve six to eight tanks, said the industry official and the congressional aide. In total the U.S. is planning to send 31 tanks, a Ukrainian battalion’s worth.

“We’re definitely working to get them to Ukraine as fast as we can,” said Pentagon spokesperson Col. Martin O’Donnell, declining to discuss specifics on the timeline.

Before Ukrainian forces can begin operating the tanks, they have to wrap up a roughly 10-week course on 31 trainer tanks at the Grafenwoehr Army base in Germany. The Ukrainians are slated to finish that training in August, according to a separate DOD official.

The first DOD official and another person familiar with Kyiv’s thinking said the tanks could even arrive in Ukraine as early as August, but that timeline may be overly optimistic. The tanks are not new; instead, the older vehicles are being stripped of their most sensitive technology, including in some cases secret depleted uranium armor, before they can be sent to Ukraine.

While the industry official said the first batch of modifications has been completed, it’s unclear if all the necessary refurbishments can be finished by the end of August.

ISW Update

quote:

Key Takeaways:

Ukrainian forces continued counteroffensive operations on at least three sectors of the front on July 27 and made gains in some areas, although Ukrainian forces appear not to have continued significant mechanized assaults south of Orikhiv in western Zaporizhia Oblast.

A US official expressed caution about assessing that the July 26 uptick in Ukrainian counteroffensive operations in western Zaporizhia Oblast is part of the Ukrainian main effort, tempering July 26 statements to the contrary.

Russian President Vladimir Putin used the Russia–Africa Economic and Humanitarian Forum in St. Petersburg on July 27 to continue efforts to posture Russia as a more attractive ally to African partner states than the collective West.

Wagner Group financier Yevgeny Prigozhin was also present in St. Petersburg on July 27 and took the opportunity to informally meet with an unknown number of African leaders, suggesting that the Wagner Group intends to remain a significant player in Africa.

Prigozhin additionally used the backdrop of the Russia-Africa summit to position Wagner as a viable anti-Western partner for post-coup Niger.

The Kremlin reportedly distributed a manual to Russian state media on framing the anniversary of the Baptism of Rus on July 28, likely as part of continued information operations and propaganda narratives to advance Russian military objectives.

Russia conducted another strike on Ukrainian port infrastructure in Odesa Oblast and rear areas of Ukraine overnight on July 26–27.

Russian forces conducted offensive operations along the Kupyansk-Svatove-Kreminna line, in Bakhmut, along the Avdiivka-Donetsk City line, and in the Donetsk-Zaporizhia Oblast border area on July 27 and did not make any confirmed advances.

Ukrainian forces continued counteroffensive operations on at least three sectors of the front on July 27 and have advanced south of Bakhmut, in the ZaporizhiaDonetsk Oblast border area, and in western Zaporizhia Oblast.

The Russian State Duma approved measures on July 27 aimed at clarifying confusion surrounding the recently updated laws regarding conscripts and reservists.

Russian authorities are discriminating against Ukrainian refugees in Belgorod Oblast, Russia.

Oil or some kind of extraction I assume? I’ve been a lot of places, but this area of the world is a complete mystery for me. Know nothing about it and know no one that has spent any meaningful time in that Mali/Niger/burkina faso area.

I assume the food mostly sucks.

They have a good bit of uranium. I believe a lot of which goes to France. Frances energy policy is majority nuclear. France also exports small reactor rods.

I’m sure there’s more to it than this, but generally the thought with trouble in Africa is resources.

This would also presumably give Russia greater influence in Africa. Africa is becoming Russia and China’s playground.

How was that? After 10 minutes of looking at it on the internet...it doesn't look ideal.

Scary as hell as a former infantryman. But counterdrone technology will be here before we know it. Directed energy weapons and jamming is my guess.

Lots of jamming going on now from what I've read. More advanced "AI" will counter the counter and is already said to be in prototype. Considering the fact that a good cell phone is more powerful than a super computer of 25 to 30 years ago, anything is possible.

INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 28 July 2023

The Russia-Africa Conference convened in St Petersburg on 27 July 2023, with 17 African heads of state attending, down from 43 at the last iteration. The event took place ten days after Russia withdrew from the Black Sea Grain Initiative (BSGI).

The BSGI had allowed the export of 30 million tonnes of Ukrainian grain to Africa, providing essential food supply to states including Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and Sudan. As well as the direct disruption of supplies, Russia's blockade of Ukraine is also causing grain prices to rise.

impact of the war in Ukraine will almost certainly compound food insecurity across Africa for at least the next two years.

Poland plans to almost double its personnel army.

This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister Yaroslav Kaczynski, reports Polskie Radio.

He added that the authorities are working on strengthening the border with Belarus, in particular, erecting fences and installing "all kinds of electronic devices" to protect the border.

Having trouble with post image, but ISW is showing Ukraine breaking through the first line of defense between Robotyne and Novoookrova (may not be quite correct spelling as a line runs through the second town on the map).

ETA: this is south east of Zaporizhzhia

Some are griping about Russia and China making inroads in Africa while they advocate the US getting out of Europe.
