I'm behind this morning so, bear with me.

This....
quote:

If the Ukrainians successfully fend off Russia

has frick all to do with this....
quote:

China will likely not invade Taiwan

And you managed, even when stumbling, bumbling, and fumbling your way through it, to give the reason why yourself.

quote:

Taiwan is like the Eastern Switzerland and will be much harder to take than Ukraine despite its size. They’ve got bunkers in the mountains in the middle of the country, and it will be a bitch and a half to weed the people out of those bunkers.

The two are nothing alike other than they can be triggered by perceived enemies of the US. You drawing weak conclusions from what may or may not happen in Ukraine is tiresome. There is a comparison to be made, but it isn't the one you are harping on.

Sometimes I just wish I could hit you with a rolled up newspaper.

Putin won't be around much longer if he keeps this up, dissent in Russia keeps getting stronger and stronger

Again, the original question was against a single missile launch.
What I posted was a best-case scenario. Those tests only take into account an unsophisticated ICBM from a country like North Korea. There’s no evidence our defense system would be effective against a sophisticated Russian ICBM.

There’s also questions as to how effective the defense system would be in a real-world scenario, even against unsophisticated North Korean ICBMs.

Our system is not designed with Russia or China in mind, as it would set off an arms race.

The point is, we do not have the capability to stop a Russian nuclear attack.

Mutually assured destruction only works as a deterrent when both sides have an instinct for survival. The Russian foreign minister mad a crack about "why would we care about a world without Russia in it" so if that isn't just sabre rattling, it's pretty unsettling.

I mean, they can stop the invasion, take their lumps, secretly kill Putin or arrest him and go back to being Russia.

Something not being discussed is what about the other non European former USSR nations that are also not NATO?

I.e Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, etc. Does Russia have any interest in annexing them or forming a military alliance?

I do believe that we are at a point in history where dissent at home in Russia can actually put real pressure on their leadership. I don't know that we've ever really had that before. Couple it with the fact that Putin and crew did not prep the populace with massive amounts of "rah rah" propaganda in effort to gain public support for this war, and that they still haven't implemented their usual gameplan of broadcasting the successes of their troops to the people back home, and you have a Russian people who aren't quite as brainwashed as usual.

The stresses of having to control or put down those protests at home can't be brushed off as nothing. They have an impact, if not for Putin, then for the rest with skin in the game.

The world has changed. Surprisingly, Russia seems to have changed with it to a degree.

We do know, unless we have some super secret defensive anti-missile system that is unlike anything the world has ever seen. Apart from that, we do know what the U.S. is capable of.

It says he has worked for CNBC and NBC for 20 years.

ETA: as an FYI, you can click on his pic and it will take you to his main Twitter page. At the top most give their credentials.

Russia just needs them to keep existing. There is no economic interest in those countries, just a lock on the back door.

What is your background in ballistic missile defense to make such an authoritative statement?
