Speaking of them, in their afternoon update today, they verified Ukrainian progress on the Velyka Novosilka axis (Russians call it the Vremivsky Ridge axis):

At the Vremyevsky sector, units of the RF Armed Forces, under pressure from the Armed Forces of Ukraine, withdrew from their positions between Staromayorsky and Rovnopol to reserve lines.

Killing men in trenches is much, much easier with a cluster shell, and Ukraine's challenge right now is overcoming Russian trenches.

In WW1 the Germans protested to the world court? That it was against the “rules “ of war for the Americans to use shotguns in trench warfare.

“The regular army welcomed the help. Prigo and Wagner, as is the wont of special forces, took the limelight and took the credit for stopping the hated Ukrainians. The press gobbled it up. Meanwhile, the big army and Putin slowly changed their strategy from offensive conquest of greater Ukraine to defense of what they already had. Prigo refused to accept the change and continued on the offensive against Bakhmut. Therein lies the rub. Rather than create a public crisis and court-martial the a-hole [Prigozhin], Moscow simply withheld the resources and let Prigo use up his manpower and firepower reserves, dooming him to a stand-down. He is, after all, no matter how cunning financially, an ex-hot dog cart owner with no political or military accomplishments. “What we never heard is three months ago Wagner was cycled out of the Bakhmut front and sent to an abandoned barracks north of Rostov-on-Don [in southern Russia] for demobilization. The heavy equipment was mostly redistributed, and the force was reduced to about 8,000, 2,000 of which left for Rostov escorted by local police. “Putin fully backed the army who let Prigo make a fool of himself and now disappear into ignominy. All without raising a sweat militarily or causing Putin to face a political standoff with the fundamentalists, who were ardent Prigo admirers. Pretty shrewd.” There is an enormous gap between the way the professionals in the American intelligence community assess the situation and what the White House and the supine Washington press project to the public by uncritically reproducing the statements of Blinken and his hawkish cohorts.

90% of this “journalism” reads like Hersh just rearranged words from preexisting coverage or ran it through Babelfish with the goal of carrying water for Putin. Im still trying to figure out what / where the groundbreaking facts are. Mind you this is coming from someone who is a fan of most of Hersh’s career.

I cant figure out how to post a pic from reddit from my phone but Ukraine claims they made a good penetration toward Tokmak. If proven true they've finally based at least one defensive line. See link below to LiveUAmap post:

They've also allegedly targeted Berdyansk:

British Defence Intelligence
INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 30 June 2023

In a June 2023 report, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) assessed that Russia's military spending budget for 2023 is around 6.6 trillion rubles (USD $85.8bn). This equates to about 4.4 per cent of Russian GDP compared with 3.6 per cent in 2021, before the invasion of Ukraine.

Russia's true military expenditure remains uncertain due to a lack of transparency, including the use of classified budget lines, which account for approximately 22 per cent of the Russian Government's total budget.

Although only part of the defence budget is spent on the war in Ukraine, the increase in spending highlights the cost of Russia's activity in Ukraine. In addition, Russia almost certainly faces extra direct budgetary defence costs due to the war, including security expenses in the occupied regions and defensive measures in regions bordering Ukraine.

Russian forces begin to flee Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant – Ukrainian Defence Intelligence
Iryna Balachuk — Friday, 30 June 2023, 09:31

The Russian invaders have begun to gradually leave the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), and some ZNPP employees have also been instructed to leave the plant by 5 July, the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU) reports.

Source: DIU on Telegram

Quote: "The latest data indicates that the occupying forces are gradually leaving the territory of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Three employees of Rosatom [a Russian state corporation specialising in nuclear energy], who led the Russians' actions, were among the first to leave the facility.

Ukrainian employees who have signed a contract with Rosatom have also been advised to evacuate. Under the instructions received, they should leave by 5 July."

Details: The Russians advise leaving for temporarily occupied Crimea.

Intelligence reports that the head of the legal department, Mantsurova, chief inspector Shtatsky and deputy head of the station for support, Gubarev, have already left for the peninsula.

The DIU also emphasises that the number of military patrols at the ZNPP and in the satellite city of Enerhodar is gradually decreasing.

Meanwhile, intelligence reports that the Russian occupiers have instructed the personnel who remain at the station to "blame Ukraine in the event of any emergency".

from UKRINFORM...

AFU confirm destruction of Russian headquarters and depot near Berdiansk

The Ukrainian military destroyed the Russian occupiers’ headquarters and fuel depot in the suburbs of Berdiansk on June 30.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine reported this on Facebook, according to Ukrinform.

"As a result of a successful strike by the Defense Forces on the morning of June 30, the occupiers’ headquarters and fuel depot were hit in the suburbs of temporarily occupied Berdiansk," the report says.

As reported, the Berdiansk city military administration reported that 11 explosions rang out in the city. A fire broke out in the area of an airfield and explosions were heard there.

WP interview with Zaluzhny, doesn't seem to be behind paywall...

In a rare, wide-ranging interview with The Washington Post, Zaluzhny expressed frustration that while his biggest Western backers would never launch an offensive without air superiority, Ukraine still has not received modern fighter jets but is expected to rapidly take back territory from the occupying Russians.

Ukraine’s top general, Valery Zaluzhny, wants shells, planes and patience

The Washington Post just did a very interesting interview with Zaluzhny. Here's a gift link to the article to get past the paywall:

LINK

I was struck by the apparent depth of his relationship with Gen. Milley. I had previously thought that the two of them had a "just-in-touch" professional relationship, but it's obviously much more than that:

quote:

Zaluzhny said he relays his concerns to Milley, whom he has grown to deeply admire and considers a friend, several times per week in conversations that can last hours. “He shares them absolutely. And I think he can help me get rid of those worries,” Zaluzhny said, adding that he told Milley on Wednesday how many more artillery shells he needs per month.

In these conversations, Zaluzhny is frank about the consequences: “We have an agreement: 24/7, we’re in touch. So, sometimes I can call up and say, ‘If I don’t get 100,000 shells in a week, 1,000 people will die. Step into my shoes,’” he said.

I also thought that this was interesting: Ukrainians are not making progress as fast as they'd like, but assigning anything like blame to them for that infuriates them.

quote:

So it “pisses me off,” Zaluzhny said, when he hears that Ukraine’s long-awaited counteroffensive in the country’s east and south has started slower than expected — an opinion publicly expressed by Western officials and military analysts and also by President Volodymyr Zelensky, though Zaluzhny was not referring to Zelensky. His troops have gained some ground — even if it’s just 500 meters — every day, he said.

“This is not a show,” Zaluzhny said Wednesday in his office at Ukraine’s General Staff headquarters. “It's not a show the whole world is watching and betting on or anything. Every day, every meter is given by blood.”

“Without being fully supplied, these plans are not feasible at all,” he added. “But they are being carried out. Yes, maybe not as fast as the participants in the show, the observers, would like, but that is their problem.”
quote:

But Zaluzhny also pointed to NATO forces’ own doctrine — which parallels Russia’s, he said — that calls for air superiority before launching ground-based deep-reaching operations.

“And Ukraine, moving to offensive operations, should follow which doctrine?” Zaluzhny said. “NATO's? The Russian Federation's? Or is that none of your business? ‘You have your own doctrine. You have tanks, you have some cannons, you have some [fighting vehicles]. You can do it.’ What is that?”
quote:

It’s like we’d go on the offensive with bows and arrows now, and everyone would say, ‘Are you crazy?’ But with this question, ‘No, no.’”

Edit: Cypher already posted, I see.

He is 100% correct. What Ukraine is trying to do without air superiority is sacrificing alot of lives. And the western politicians like Biden are responsible for that. That training and those planes should have been there months ago. Same with the long range missles. I don't understand why Ukraine is not given the tools to finish this. If you want the war to end and lives to be saved this has to happen. If this offensive fails and the opportunity is lost you only have to look at weak politicians in western capitals. The Ukrainians are paying for that weakness with their blood. What they were asked to do, while not being supplied with all the necessary parts amounts to murder.

Or what should have happened is Ukraine arming itself prior to this at its own taxpayers expense rather than blaming others for what they failed to do.

Prigozhin is officially ending the troll farm. Good riddance to the trolls.
