Key Takeaways

Wagner Group financier Yevgeny Prigozhin and Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov may have compelled the Russian theater commander in Ukraine, Army General Valery Gerasimov, to resume artillery ammunition distribution to Wagner forces in Bakhmut despite Gerasimov’s desired de-prioritization of that effort.

Kadyrov’s threats to transfer his forces to Bakhmut may have blackmailed the Russian military command into allocating ammunition to Wagner mercenaries.

Kadyrov likely supported Wagner’s blackmail efforts against the Russian military command to reestablish his position within the circle of power of the Kremlin.

Gerasimov's apparent need to negotiate with subordinate commanders and those commanders’ ability to force his hand suggests that chain of command problems are significantly impacting the Russian military's ability to conduct coherent theater-wide operations.

These events raise questions about Russia’s ability to coordinate a coherent theater-wide defensive campaign.

Prigozhin’s and Kadyrov’s ability to significantly influence Russian military command decisions relies on Putin’s willingness to appease them and his reliance on their forces – both of which will likely degrade after further blackmail efforts.

Prigozhin’s continued fight to complete the capture of Bakhmut contradicts his consistent narrative that capturing Bakhmut lacks strategic value.

Russian forces continued limited offensive operations northeast of Kupyansk and south of Kreminna.

Russian forces made some territorial gains in Bakhmut as of May 7 and continued limited offensive operations on the Avdiivka-Donetsk front.

Russian sources claimed that Ukrainian forces launched up to 23 drones at Crimea on the night of May 6 to 7.

Russian federal subjects are continuing to recruit and form regional armed formations and volunteer battalions.

Russian occupation authorities continue to plan and carry out forced evacuations from Zaporizhia Oblast.

That’s not a USMC AAV

So what has been his problem for the past year? He has had time to run to China and bash the US.

Macron is a snake in the grass.

I have been against this hard stand for Ukraine in Bakhmut losing so many men but for one day at least I think with Wagner attacking with all their forces and Kadyrov bringing his forces to the fight as well, Ukraine should reinforce their positions with their reserves in Chasiv Yar. This has become a a fight less about territorial gains and more about who has the stronger will to fight. Ukraine can’t give Putin Bakhmut on the eve of May 9th.

No w in its GERMAN pronunciation, so wrong. However, I am an American and can pronounce it Wagner if I want to.

Signs of Russians preparing to leave Melitopol:

- Russian passport office closed, equipment moved out, torn passports found.

- Russian mil personnel seen switching to civilian clothing, discarded uniforms found in dumpsters.

- Deadly surprises left: booby traps and mines left attached to trees, ready to cause harm.

More signs of Russians panicking: Massive queues at Chongar & Kalanchak checkpoints on the way to Crimea. Vehicles with special permits & military personnel bypassing the queues. Others already waiting for 5+ hours. Reports suggest some trucks may carry stolen/looted goods from Ukraine.

It's started. Rats / ships. A sure sign that the Russians are in retreat is the looting of food stores and hospitals. Home appliances were taken months ago.

While I take this claim from Ukraine with a very large grain of salt, last night looks to have been one of the busier ones we have seen for their air defences for awhile.

Twitter - @Faytuks

quote:

Ukraine's air force claims that they shot down all 35 Shahed-136/131 drones launched at Ukraine last night.

Edit: Update.

Now being reported that it was 60 drones in total across Ukraine, 35/36 were at Kyiv itself and the above claim refers to those only.

quote:

"This was the most massive drone attack on the capital during the entire war," Kyiv mayor Klitschko said. The Ukrainian General Staff reported that in total 35 out of 35 launched Shahed-drones were shot down.

quote:

Klitschko also reports that a total of 60 drones were launched towards Ukraine yesterday, of which 36 were shot down in the capital. Thus, the number shot down and reported by the Ukrainian General Staff seems to refer only to the capital.

Twitter - @NOELreports

It would seem Russia is ramping things up leading into May 9th so they have something to show if Bahkmut remains, at least very partially, in Ukrainian hands. Despite quite a bit of noise about massive assaults there last night there is little information to be seen about it from either Russian or Ukraiian sources.

British Defence Intelligence
INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 08 May 2023

Russian military recruiters have been targeting central Asian migrant workers in Russia to serve in Ukraine. Recruiters have visited mosques and immigration offices to recruit. At immigration offices, staff who speak Tajik and Uzbek routinely attempt to recruit migrants.

Radio Free Europe reported recruiters offering sign-up bonuses of USD $2,390 and salaries of up to USD $4,160 a month. Migrants have also been offered a fast-track Russian citizenship path of six months to one year, instead of the usual five years.

The high monthly salary and sign-up bonuses will entice some migrant workers to sign up. These recruits are likely sent to the Ukrainian frontlines where the casualty rate is extremely high.

Recruiting migrants is part of the Russian Ministry of Defence's attempts to fulfil its target of 400,000 volunteers to fight in Ukraine. The authorities are almost certainly seeking to delay any new overt mandatory mobilisation for as long as possible to minimise domestic dissent.

Very interesting note in Konrad Muzyka's subscription newsletter:

quote:

Indeed, Cherevaty stated on Friday that Prigozhin lied about a lack of shells. He added that Wagner units suffered huge losses due to the successful Ukrainian actions, but the organisation did not suffer from shell hunger. On 4MAY alone, Russians reportedly fired 520 times on Ukrainian troop positions, the highest intensity across Ukraine.

Based on conversations we have had with Ukrainian soldiers deployed near Bakhmut, there is no evidence to suggest that Wagner has a larger problem with access to ammunition. They claimed that the intensity of artillery fire had been maintained at the same level for weeks and that Prigozhin’s claims were unfounded.

If this is correct, then the whole "shell hunger" thing was just a pretext. The whole episode was about Prigozhin's failure to capture the city by the May 9th deadline that Putin had given him.

Define food equipment. Most of the seed oil crushing plants are owned by Turkish companies.

Last week, the European Commission sent proposals to the EU member states regarding the 11th package of sanctions against the russian federation, — EC spokesman Eric Mamer said at a briefing in Brussels.

According to him, on Wednesday, May 10, the first discussion of the new package of sanctions is expected at the meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (Coreper).

As of today, 90 vessels are awaiting inspection in Turkish territorial waters, of which 62 are vessels that are being loaded. Inspections of both incoming and outgoing fleets are blocked.

In general, the export of Ukrainian agricultural products through the grain corridor in April did not reach 3 million tons.

This is a reminder to the rest of you that you shouldn't believe the random Russian propaganda that FlintEastwood regularly brings in here.

The warehouse that Russia bragged about blowing up that was supposedly full of NATO equipment was actually a Red Cross warehouse full of humanitarian aid.

An amazing photo. Some Ukrainian soldiers are on the hills west of Bakhmut. Between them and the city, you can see what, before the war, was a motocross track. A year ago, on a spring weekend, families would be enjoying a day out, watching the races there.

Edit: I should have said two years ago.

Are any of you hearing anything about Prigozhin being ambushed and killed 20 miles outside of Bakhmut?

One of my friends texted me about this earlier in the morning although he said to be wary since it was primarily in Russian social media.

I'm not denying that they were there, but the issue with still pictures from a few days ago is that it's a railroad in front of the warehouse.

So, did this train stop?
Did anything get unloaded and stored in said warehouse?
That's much more important than a picture.

The implication is that because tanks were on a train that passed in front of the warehouse they are being stored there, but it's a difficult conclusion to draw from a single picture. Because if we allow everything to be targeted where military equipment passed within 72 hours, everything and anything are legitimate targets then.
