Interesting conversation with biz friend who is a former director of Gazprom.
He concurs that Germany was in decline before Covid and reliance on Russian natural gas was not a longterm successful strategy for both Russia and Germany.

@NOELreports notes from Sec. Austin's statement at the end of today's Ramstein meeting:
quote:
What were the outcomes of today's Ramstein meeting:
1. Germany and the Netherlands provide Ukraine with more mine rollers, vehicles and fuel tanks.
2. Allies will conduct training for tankers, as well as for air defense operators (Abrams tanks will arrive in Germany in a few weeks).
3. The West handed Ukraine already more than 230 tanks and 1,500 other armored vehicles to equip 9 armored brigades.
4. A Leopard 2 Service Center will be created in Poland.
5. Ukraine received green light for cooperation with the NATO procurement agency.
6. Allies are ready to support Ukraine as long as necessary.

“If you look at it in a strategic way, Ukrainian forces are holding a lot of enemy troops inside the city; it prevents them from going to different parts of the front line,” Tatarin said. “That’s why we’re holding on to the city, to eliminate as many enemy forces as possible.”
So basically it's sort of like a Ukrainian version of the Alamo.

Sounds like you do not understand either one of those battles.

I didn't know that the Texans had an access road in and out of the Alamo that they were able to keep open. That's why I read this thread: I learn new stuff every day.

Russian Arms Sales to India Stall on Fears Over US Sanctions
Not smart to depend on Moscow for your weapons deliveries.
Russian Arms Sales to India Stall on Fears Over US Sanctions
quote:
Russian deliveries of military supplies to India have ground to a halt as the countries struggle to find a payment mechanism that doesn’t violate US sanctions, according to Indian officials with knowledge of the matter.
Indian payments for weapons amounting to more than $2 billion have been stuck for about a year, and Russia has stopped supplying credit for a pipeline of about $10 billion worth of spare parts as well as two S-400 missile-defense system batteries that have yet to be delivered, according to the officials, who asked not be identified due to the sensitivity of the issue. Russia is India’s biggest supplier of weapons needed in border disputes with Pakistan and China.
India is unable to settle the bill in US dollars due to concerns about secondary sanctions, while Russia remains unwilling to accept rupees due to exchange-rate volatility, the officials said. New Delhi also doesn’t want to complete the deal in Russian rubles due to concerns about being able to purchase enough on the open market at a fair rate, they said.
India’s government has proposed Moscow use the rupees from weapons sales to invest in Indian debt and capital markets to avoid stockpiling rupees, they added, but Vladimir Putin’s government doesn’t find that appealing.

The point is that defenders at The Alamo were facing insurmountable odds, but the drawn out battle allowed the rest of the Texan army the time to regroup and prepare for a larger battle that they could win.

I mean more in terms of simply keeping the enemy busy. I didn't mean a direct 1 to 1 comparison. Geez you guys are touchy.

I understand them fine. I wasn't saying they were exactly the same.
Maybe b/c I'm from Texas and our history is so heavily drilled into us that I assumed y'all would know what I meant. AGGIES got what I meant at least.

So tell me how this BRICS currency will work out again?

I obviously completely misunderstood your point. I thought you were trolling and indicating that the Ukrainian defenders of Bakhmut would be surrounded and all be killed, as the defenders of the Alamo were.

I was less troubled by the Alamo reference than your confession that Aggies are drilled into deeply…

Moscow court orders Bellingcat investigator Christo Grozev’s arrest in absentia
quote:
A Moscow district court has ordered the arrest in absentia of Bellingcat investigative journalist Christo Grozev in absentia, reports Mediazona.
The court made the ruling during a closed hearing. Veronika Polyakova, a lawyer representing Grozev, reported that the court ordered a two-month pre-trial detention for her client. Polyakova did not discuss the details of the charges, citing a non-disclosure agreement.
Mediazona says that Grozeva has been charged with illegally crossing the Russian border. The investigation did not disclose any details about the events. Christo Grozev himself has said that the FSB accused him of “having helped journalist [Roman] Dobrokhotov leave Russia in 2021 to avoid being thrown in jail.”
Also on Friday, Russia’s Ministry of Justice declared Grozev a “foreign agent.”
Russia’s Internal Affairs Ministry put Grozev on Russia’s federal wanted list in December 2022 without specifying what he was wanted for. In 2020, Grozev and Alexey Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation identified FSB officers involved in poisoning Navalny. In June 2022, the FSB said that Grozev was involved in a Ukrainian intelligence operation, allegedly as an MI6 agent, to hijack a Russian Air Force plane. Grozev said Bellingcat was caught between Russian and Ukrainian intelligence agents while filming a documentary.

Interesting thread on Wagner by the well-known @Tatarigami_UA

1/ Despite PMC Wagner's reputation for heinous crimes and brutal tactics, certain aspects of their activities have received limited coverage. This thread illuminates the far-reaching influence of PMC Wagner and the significant security risks it poses to the global community
![]()
2/ The occupation of Soledar in the Donetsk region by the Wagner mercenaries provided the russian media with a significant success story, enabling them to shift the focus away from the army's major operational failures and loss of control over the Kherson and Kharkiv regions.
3/ As the reputational bubble of Wagner continued to inflate, and the "PMC" was granted exceptional rights to recruit criminals, its head, Prigozhin, accused Defense Minister Shoigu and Chief of the General Staff Gerasimov of "treason" due to the lack of support and ammunition.
4/ To consolidate his power, putin relies more on conventional forces, which is why he has recently taken measures to curb Wagner's internal influence. The NYT reported that putin attempted to resolve the conflict by calling for a meeting between Prigozhin and Shoigu on 22.02
5/ Wagner's loss of ability to recruit from prisons has led to a growing dependence on the Ministry of Defense, as they now rely on conscripted soldiers who are forced to sign contracts with them amidst high mortality rate among convict mercenaries
![]()
6/ While some of you may be familiar with Wagner's involvement in the russia's invasion of Ukraine and Syria, their operations extend beyond these theaters. Wagner's activities have been observed in Mali, Sudan, Libya, the Central African Republic, and Burkina Faso.
![]()
7/ PMC Wagner's flexibility surpasses that of the russian army, thanks to their separate budget and unconventional methods. For instance, US Assistant Secretary of State for EAP, Daniel Kritenbrink, reported that Wagner obtained satellite images from the Chinese company, Spacety.
8/ Over the past decade, PMC Wagner has expanded its influence in Middle Eastern and African countries by filling power vacuums left by European nations and exploiting natural resources such as gold and precious stones. PMC's annual income can be several billion US dollars.
9/ "Wagner" has been generating revenue from illegal mining and selling of gold and precious stones in the CAR, with an estimated annual income of around one billion dollars, according to Politico. The company began exploiting gold in the CAR in 2018 with around 2,000 mercenaries
10/ In 2023, the departure of French troops from Burkina Faso paved the way for the Wagner group to gain access to the country's raw resources, including precious materials. The Wagner group has also attempted to establish a foothold in Mozambique and Madagascar.
![]()
11/ Given the evolving situation in Sudan, it is crucial to keep in mind that PMC Wagner has a vested interest in securing gold mines there and maintains connections with the RSF. Although there is currently no evidence of Wagner's direct involvement, the situation can change
12/ Since 2021, UN experts in Mali received reports of executions, torture, rape, pillaging, detentions, and enforced disappearances. These atrocities were reportedly committed by the Malian armed forces and their allies such as Wagner in the Mopti area and other locations.
![]()
13/ Collaboration with Wagner should be strongly discouraged. While some countries have already imposed sanctions on the company's mercenaries, such as freezing of assets and travel bans, more stringent and consolidated efforts are necessary to mitigate security risks from Wagner
![]()
14/ The designation of the "Wagner" as a transnational criminal organization by the US and Lithuania is a step that could lead to its international recognition as a criminal organization. Cooperation with Wagner will result in political and economic costs for participants

It would seem if they are NOT "connected to the Russian goverment" per the Russian goverment, they could be taken out by other goverments ie, France, USA, England with relative haste with no consequence.

Wagner could potentially become a real life SPECTRE of James Bond fame.
