Looks like lots of cruise missile strikes over night

Looking at the interactive map that scrapes social media Map the missile attacks were far less widespread and dense than the ones that started after Ukraine hit the Kerch Strait Bridge. Add to this they have been pretty much nonexistent for a while it lends credence to the idea they don't have a ton left, either that or they are saving them for some time in the future.

Official: Russia attacks Kyiv with 'almost all types of aerial weapons' in mass attack
by The Kyiv Independent news desk
March 9, 2023 8:26 am

Russia attacked Kyiv with drones and "almost all types" of cruise missiles during a mass attack across Ukraine, Serhii Popko, head of the Kyiv Oblast military administration, said.

Explosions were reported in the cities of Kyiv, Kharkiv, Khmelnytsky, Zhytomyr, as well as Poltava, Lviv, Vinnytsia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil oblasts amid Russia's mass attack early in the morning on March 9.

Popko said that the city's air defense shot down the cruise missiles and drones but that a Russian nuclear-capable hypersonic aero-ballistic air-to-surface Kinzhal missile hit an infrastructure site.

British Defence Intelligence
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 09 March 2023
INTELLIGENCE UPDATE

On 07 March 2023, Belarusian President Alexandr Lukashenko confirmed that one of Russia's small fleet of A-50U MAINSTAY D airborne early warning and control aircraft deployed in Belarus had been damaged. The aircraft was almost certainly attacked by a small uncrewed air system.

The MAINSTAY has likely now been moved to a repair facility at Taganrog in Russia. The transit flight reportedly took place at a lower than usual altitude, likely because of damage to the pressurised cabin.

The MAINSTAY was likely providing situational awareness for MiG-31K FOXHOUND D fighter aircraft modified to launch the AS-24 KILLJOY air launched ballistic missile which Russia sees as a key strategic capability. The modification saw the jets' internal radar removed to balance the airframe, making pilots reliant on external sources of situational awareness, such as MAINSTAY. It is a realistic possibility that joint Russo-Belarusian air activity will now be forced to rely on ground control and fighter escort until another MAINSTAY can be deployed.

Russia has resumed their strikes on the electrical grid with one of the largest launches in quite some time. Reports put it at around 80 missiles of various types fired this morning at various targets across Ukraine.

Crucially, the last remaining power line to the nuclear plant in Zaporizhia has been cut leaving it on backup and emergency power.

Looks like in the midst of the missile strikes the Russians also moved 7 fighters to base in Crimea.

Also heard that they launch a handful of hypersonic missiles that Ukrainian air defense apparently can't track well

In the unrecognized Transnistria, they announced the successful prevention of an assassination attempt on the "president of the republic" Vadym Krasnosilskyi. The Security Service of Ukraine is accused of preparing a possible terrorist attack.

The department also said that it prevented a terrorist attack and detained the suspects. They are already allegedly testifying.

Russia Launches Massive Overnight Missile Attack, Explosions in Kyiv and Across Ukraine

Ten Russian Tu-95 bombers flying over the Caspian Sea were the backbone of the attack, firing X-22 cruise missiles at civilian targets. As in past assaults, the Kremlin appeared to be attempting to take down sections of Ukraine’s power grid.

Russian planners led off the strikes with a wave of Shahed drones, an Iran-made aircraft with a small warhead.

The main strike, cruise missiles launched by bombers and warships in the Black Sea, was launched some 90 minutes later, with warheads hitting targets around 6 A.M. Follow up strikes were reported an hour later at some locations.

According to the Ukrainian military, Russian forces fired in total:

28 Kh-101/Kh-555 air-based cruise missiles
20 Kalibr sea-based cruise missiles
6 X-22 air-based cruise missiles
6 Kh-47 "Kinzhal" air-based cruise missiles
8 launches of guided air missiles
2 Kh-31P
6 X-59
13 launches of S-300 anti-aircraft guided missiles.

I think that Patriot can hit them, but Patriot is not yet operating in Ukraine.

Also overnight, the parliament in Georgia withdrew the "foreign agents" law that sparked the protests.

The protesters have won the fight, for the time being. But Georgia still has a pro-Russian government, so the problems aren't over.

So nothing got through except the hypersonic? That sounds pretty good, if true.

It may be true for Kyiv according to the mayor. Many missiles got thru elsewhere in Ukraine.

From the Kyiv Post article I linked above.

Yet another massive Russian missile attack hit cities across Ukraine overnight, killing at least six people and prompting massive power outages including at Europe's largest nuclear power plant.

Ukraine's commander in chief Valery Zaluzhny said in a statement that 81 missiles had been fired by Russia, 34 of which were shot down.

The article also has details of the affected cities.

Commander of the Ground Forces Oleksandr Syrskyi, on Bakhmut:

quote:

"Each day of the city's defense allows us to gain time to prepare reserves and prepare for future offensive operations. At the same time, in the battles for this fortress, the enemy loses the most prepared and combat-ready part of its army - Wagner's assault units," he said.

The rumored 5 to 1 or 7 to 1 K/D ratio around Bakhmut for Ukraine have to be true for the General of the area to support staying.

Russia is going to wish they had those men come April/May.

All else being the same, a defender has a substantial advantage over the attacker. Ukraine is just better off keeping Russia on the offensive for now.

For the time being is accurate. The government plans on "rebranding" the bill to present it again. This is an attempt by the Georgia Dream Party to consolidate power and shutdown all opposition over time.

Yeah, Russia still has some control, but the rhetoric the President lady was using in her speech was pretty strong in that she was saying she stands with the wishes of the Georgian people and that oe of her earlier speeches about the legislation was "dictated by the Kremlin for her to read".

Hopefully she continues to listen to the will of the people and distances the country from the grip of the Kremlin. If more of these States who ha e been puppets of Russia continue to turn their back on Putin, it can only be good for western interests regarding Russia's place at the global table going forward.

The president is an independent, but she was supported by the Georgia Dream Party in the last election. She may veto it, if and when it comes up again, but her veto could be overridden by the government and pushed through parliament.. Political power in Georgia rests with the oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili, who served as prime minister in 2012-2013 and founder of the Georgia Dream. His billions are from his financial ties in Russia. The current prime minister was hand picked by him. Georgia's economy is pretty much dependent on trade with Russia. This puts them in a precarious position. Many Georgian citizens also live and work in Russia, and it is estimated that they send as much as 1.5 billion dollars back into the Georgian economy.
