UPDATE ON UKRAINE 23 February 2023
INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
Over the last 48 hours, heavy fighting has continued in the Bakhmut sector where Ukrainian forces are keeping resupply routes open to the west despite Russia's creeping encirclement over the last six weeks.
Further south in Donetsk Oblast, the town of Vuhledar has again experienced heavy shelling. There is a realistic possibility that Russia is preparing for another offensive effort in this area despite costly failed attacks in early February and late 2022.
Russia's Eastern Group of Forces likely still has responsibility for the Vuhledar operation. Its commander, Colonel General Rustam Muradov, is likely under intense pressure to improve results following harsh criticism from the Russian nationalist community after previous setbacks. However, it is unlikely that Muradov has a striking force capable of achieving a breakthrough.

Russian President Vladimir Putin revived his imperialistic narrative that Russia is fighting for Russia's "historic frontiers"
What would the "historic frontiers" be? Does that include the Baltics, Moldova, the Stans and Romania and Poland for instance? Because that is a definite no-go. Putin wants to fight the big fight. He's tired of the United States.
This is going to take some time. It will be comforting that we will have a new CIC when it gets hot.

After being MAULED in Ukraine, Russia won't be invading anyone, especially a NATO member, for decades.
It will take a very long time to replace their equipment losses and ammo supplies.

Well his bellicose statements point towards an unstable time. But Putin does not have decades. He may have a decade and he will be like Biden at that point.

Last one for now, seems russia and Serbia continue to sow the discord in the region with Kosovo as well.
Makes me wonder if the Serbia/Kosovo situation flares up again somewhat coordinated with action in Transinistra and potentially Moldova as a whole.
Don’t profess to be well versed on Balkan history, just know enough to know it’s historically messy with changing borders.

Even the anti Putin, Navalny, has the same mindset. Any of those who are in a position to take Putin's place are as bad or worse.

An invitation to never ending international conflict.
Just run down the list of historical conquests and/or empires:

Spanish prime minister is in Kyiv today.

Sánchez has announced that Spain will try to send to Kiev "in the coming weeks or months" 10 Leopard tanks, instead of the six announced by Defense Minister Margarita Robles yesterday in Congress. The Spanish president has also indicated that he is not against sending planes, but that it is an issue that must be "discussed with the allies."

Then we are going to have to fight them. Give them a few years and their populace will forget about anything Western.

There is definitely a counter argument in there about NATO equipment and ammo stores as well. Don't know how long it will take to backfill everything donated but it's at least worth mentioning

Agree and I think China has been watching this.

Why embargo Russia and yes the sanctions have had an impact. They certainly made bank in the spring of 2022 but that ship has sailed while India and China bank on huge discounts.
To really hurt Russia France and Germany should allow hydraulic fracturing of tight shale formations. They have lots they can produce on their own. So has Ukraine but 2014 stopped those agreements with Exxon, Shell and Chevron

Looks like Russia wants to reconstitute the SU either on the battlefield or through subversive, peel off the Balkans change the politics means. We are going to have to deal with them. Think about where this started and where it is today? It's a world of difference with the world gradually taking sides. What will be interesting to me is if Turkey stays in the fold. They can throw a wrench in things in the area.

Serbia and Russia have always been podnas. Russia was too weak economically in the 1990's to do anything.
Turkey has always played several sides, The West, Russia and the Middle East Arabs & Shia, plus Israel. Their geographic location and trading crossroads mindset is what it is. Their Bayraktar drones is old Israeli technology.
