Have to admit, what we're doing to the ruble freaks me out a little bit Much like a war with international involvement and nuclear states - nobody knows for sure how this ends

You mean what Russia forced us to do to the Ruble after they invaded a sovereign state…

Oof…what a tough situation. I think I’d have stayed with my wife and kid, but who knows.

Dude would’ve gotten some major brownie points staying behind and fighting alongside her family.

He felt he’d put them in more danger by staying as an American. They all miscalculated Russia actually invading, he says none of them thought they would. I guess they just figured Putin wanted to show off the tanks like classic cars.

That said, I’d have dragged the wife and kid kicking and screaming, but not my life nor situation.

That makes sense.

Hope he, and the family, are okay.

The Balearic Island newspaper Ultima Hora reported Sunday that a $7.8 million yacht "partially sank" at the docks on the Spanish island of Mallorca after a Ukrainian sailer opened the valves.

The sailor was arrested after the incident with the massive boat named the Lady Anastasia. The ship boasts nearly a 156-foot length and five cabins and employs the sailor along with a few other staffers. It's owned by Russian citizen Alexander Mijeev, who once headed the Russian Helicopter Corporation, which builds aircraft for the Russian military. In 2016, however, Mijeev took over Rostec, a weapons supplier.

In court, the sailor explained that the owner of the ship is in charge of the production of weapons that are currently hitting his country. When he saw the footage of the Russian cruise missiles hitting civilian targes like apartment buildings and a Kindergarten, the sailor said he was moved to act. He said that he knew the missile was produced by the company. That's why he took revenge on the owner. It caused only material damage, he explained, never physical.

He opened the valve in the engine room and a second where the crew lives. He told three crew members, also Ukrainians to abandon ship.

"The owner of this ship is a criminal who makes his living selling weapons and now they kill Ukrainians," he told the police when they came to arrest him.

The judge released him, but the sailor was charged.

UPDATE: Russian ruble continues to drop, now down 41% against the U.S. dollar in early trade - REU

The question is - do the Russian people view this as a result of their own leadership’s decisions, or as the West just piling onto Russia for trying to ensure its security?

Depending on the effectiveness of Russian state media’s propaganda, this could either doom Putin’s reputation or galvanize it.

Lmao if it’s true the Russians are having trouble, the Belarusians will be dead meat. How much morale you think the Belarusians, trying to invade some country they have absolutely no business with, are gonna have. Fighting for a bumfrick country still clinging to communism.

I'm not sure I'd say "forced" even though I am happy to attribute blame for the conflict to Russia.

The responsive action was/is up to us to select and gauge as for fallout and risk/benefit. I don't have confidence that has been done properly, but more than that, I'm not sure it CAN be done properly/completely. And if it crashes economies outside of Russia, I'm not sure how much blame I put on Putin will be of any solace.

It's no different the US and EU providing direct military supply to the conflict - I don't necessarily disagree with it, but it's impossible to completely predict the consequences.

My theory was that one of the reasons Putin was taking it slow was that he could bait the West into doing something stupid that would allow him to justify a broader campaign.

I feel like the west is doing that.

Enacting sanctions is textbook response for this scenario.

Eta: he will claim it's escalatory and use it as an excuse for something bigger of course.

There’s something terrifying about fighting an army of people who have never been laid and jerk off to bizarre shite. Idk how you predict what that person might do.
