I emailed a friend in AK who retired as a squadron commander of Brrrts to see his views on usage in Ukraine

Here is the response of a retired A-10 squadron commander
Would probably work pretty good. Problem, as always is the logistics tail and where you can hit.
716 built. Less than half of them still flying. Subtract those crashed and those turned into lawn ornaments, I’d guess there are about 300 left at the Boneyard in Tucson. Don’t know how many have been destroyed.
Basing becomes a problem. Can’t base in Belarus, as it is friendly to Putin. If you base to the W, it puts Poland, Slovakia, Romania, Hungary, Moldova into play as targets. If you base in Romania, you have to defend the base with something. It’s a long trip across Ukraine, 800 mi from westernmost border to Luhansk in the E, meaning you either have to base in country or have tanker support. Then there are the weapons. 30 mm is hard to come by, iron bombs, not so much. And you don’t want a hog without the gun. Add to that the maintenance and pilots (training included), and this gets difficult in a hurry. Given the large number of former hog pilots out there, I don’t think getting mercs to fly them would be all that hard. Would end up being a DIP (die in place) mission, though, not unlike Iraq / Afghanistan where you don’t want to get captured because after capture the only variable would be how painful your death would be.
You also end up with the Vietnam problem, of not being able to hit anything important in Russia (fuel, ammo, and other logistics dumps) without expanding the war, especially true if you base somewhere outside Ukraine.
A better solution would be to bury the Russians in tens of thousands of drones. All you have to supply are drones (which are weapons), and the controlling units. All Russian equipment is channelized on either the roads or rail lines. Armor is limited with engine lifetimes around 200 hours, just over 8 days of use, before they need to be replaced, so their log tail is huge.
Fun idea, though. Hope all is well. Been raining for a couple weeks. Plants are happy. So are weeds. Cheers –

I have to agree with him. We all love the A-10's, but armed drones would be a far better solution in that AO.

Its hard to tell when Rand is standing up. He is posturing for another presidential run and playing to his base (of about 300 people).
He reminds me of Greg Abbott, a little (literally) yappy dog trying to act tough.

Oh no Ukraine Bros, why is NPR raising questions about our funding going towards the prolonging of this regional conflict half a world away while our Western European "allies" who are not running $25+ trillion dollar debts and who have far more at stake are giving only small fractions of the financial sums that Biden and War, Inc. are?

There’s nothing wrong about asking questions. There’s nothing wrong about oversight. Journalists should ask questions and officials should make Ukraine accountable. It shouldn’t be “news”, it should be standard operating procedure.

Hey man did you see bro Putin bent the knee on the grain embargo? Such an alpha

We won’t give them A-10 aircraft. We don’t share them with anyone, even Britain. Not many US aircraft you can say that for. They will get f-16’s my guess is somewhere around two squadrons worth or so between 24-30 planes. It’s the most plentiful out of the Eurofighter, Rafale and Gripen which would be the other possible candidates to send them and the f-16 is probably the most versatile to meet the needs of Ukraine’s Air Force.

Soooooo…
When’s this gonna end?
If the news about this bifurcated like grain embargo deal is accurate I suspect that is the beginning of the end. August is going to be a bad month for Russia militarily so hopefully the end is in sight.

Please explain to me how the SU-25 has done so well. It seems like you hear one gets blown out of the sky each day. Hell a 19 year old kid already has shot 6 down by himself.
Posted on 7/22/22 at 1:17 pm to LSUPilot07
The odds of one person shooting down 6 of the exact same aircraft are astronomically small. It’s almost assuredly feel good propaganda to give the Ukrainians a hero much like the mythical Ghost of Kyiv.

The Putin Patriots will most likely be around to claim that Vladimir's compassion and empathy were the driving force behind the signed agreement.

Recent shipments of U.S. and allied weapons, particularly the Himars multiple-launch rocket systems and 155mm howitzers, have helped to blunt Russia’s offensive in the Donbas and stabilize the situation there, Mr. Zelensky said. The Russians used to fire 12,000 artillery shells daily against 1,000 to 2,000 by Ukraine, he said. Now, he added, Ukraine can fire some 6,000 shells a day while Russia is beginning to feel a shortage of ammunition and troops.
This change in the balance of firepower has stemmed Ukrainian casualties, Mr. Zelensky said. At the peak of fighting in May and June, he said, Ukraine was losing between 100 and 200 troops a day; now, it is down to some 30 fatalities a day and around 250 wounded.
The HIMARs are doing work. They have pushed the Russian logistical system to the breaking point at the same time Ukraine’s artillery stockpiles are increasing.
Now if cowards like OMLandshark and the Germans don’t force Ukraine into a premature ceasefire things could get rather interesting.
