The Ruhr Valley is very similar to the Mississippi River valley south of Baton Rouge. It’s clustered with tons of petrochemical plants and factories. Nearly all of these factories either use natural gas as a source of electricity in a cogen unit or use natural gas as a raw material to make something else (like fertilizer or plastic).

The Russian air defense systems aren't optimized yet to distinguish these guided rockets from the dumb rockets and the Ukrainians are firing grads or other non-precision rockets to make it tough to see what's guided and what isn't.

I was about to reply to your other post when I saw this. The problem for Russia with Grad vs HIMARS targeting is they have very similar flight paths until they can quickly distinguish between the two Ukraine can fire lots of Grad rockets with the HIMARS rockets and Russia has to choose between letting them all strike or wasting lots of missiles on the dumb munitions as well. Both are a positive for Ukraine as long as the exploit persists.

US to give Ukraine more HIMARS rocket systems.

The White House is expected to announce a new package of military aid to Ukraine this week, John Kirby, coordinator for strategic communications at the U.S. National Security Council, said, as cited by online newspaper Yevropeiska Pravda. Kirby clarified that the new aid package will include additional HIMARS multiple rocket launchers, as well as additional ammunition for rocket launchers and artillery.

It was announced during this briefing....

I think he's pointing out that the Ukrainians are claiming they shot down the more recent plane whereas the previous post speculated on friendly fire. It was on the south bank of the Dnieper in Russian occupied territory but close to the lines, so I suppose either is plausible. Both seem to agree it's a Russian Su-35, though.

Thanks. I hadn't considered the missile waste aspect. I saw some commentary that the Russians should eventually be able to update their anti-aircraft systems to differentiate HIMARS, though it might take a number of months. Does that sound plausible to you?

Plastic is not made from Natural gas. It is made from naphtha sold by refineries (Europe was a big buyer of naphtha from Russia before sanctions) or from NGL's removed from Wet natural gas. NGL's were coming mostly from US via ship or from the wet natural gas produced by the Groningen field in the Netherlands. Ammonia and methanol are from natural gas.

Germany's total ammonia production is really not that much a little more than half of CF Industries Donaldsonville in total

The geopolitical climate has totally changed. Western nations haven’t been this weak since immediately after the Vietnam war. By comparison, Russia and the Chinese have never been as strong geopolitically.

Turkey has never played both sides. They accepted hush money in exchange for non involvement from the US in the past. They don’t want our money anymore.

Part of what makes this thread so hilarious and bizarre is many of you haven’t been paying attention since Christmas Day 1991.

I have paid attention for years. All of this affects my business while creating or crushing business opportunities.

There will be need for manufacturing when Russia is stopped and kicked out. I have manufacturing plants for sale

Everything I have read makes the implication that they should be able to eventually differentiate the flight characteristics of the two systems but beyond that I am completely in the dark in terms of how hard and how long the process would be. I would think Russia's anti-aircraft/missile defense systems would be really good but I thought that about their tank corp just 5 months ago.

You don't seem to have been paying attention since February 24 of this year. Yeah, I've been watching Putin become a Stalin fanboy for years, and set back Russia by a decade at least. It sucks for the Russians, they are on the road to irrelevance yet again.

You’re right. Ukraine is winning, the Euro isn’t collapsing and hostile nations aren’t mobilizing against the west.

Like I said, IT WAS THE SAME VIDEO.

The link from Russia shooting their own jet down used a video of this “new” story where Ukraine shot “another” jet down.

But hey, must be legit; this time.

Not sure how you’ve come to this conclusion when Putin himself doesn’t even agree with you on Russia. He’s compared himself to Peter the Great in aspiration which implies Peter the Great had Russia in a better place or at minimum was the start of taking Russia to a better geopolitical position by starting the Russian Empire. Clearly Russia does not have the same level of geopolitical position as the Soviet Union either.

And I’m someone who believes Russia has been building power and influence via their energy resources. Now obviously to a degree they’ve been shown as a paper Tiger militarily, but on the whole “since Christmas 1991” they’ve been building geopolitical influence to a solid level.

China is another story for someone like maybe crazy4lsu to comment on with much greater specifics than I can, but at present I think there’s likely several arguments to be made for past Chinese dynasties to have had more power and influence than present day China relative to the world at their time.

China, in my opinion, has done a far better job of building geopolitical power and influence than Russia at present.

“Western” nations are mobilizing against Russia and China. Used quotations to include Japan and their gravitation away from minimal defense only military policy in the last decade. Poland is getting Abrams tanks. NATO is doubling its border with Russia. Germany increasing defense spending. Eastern Europe and the Baltics getting American equipment upgrades over old Soviet equipment. NATO troop position movement more favorable to Eastern Europe. On and on.
