Russian diplomat resigns, urges others to follow his example.

Sorry Jim can you link this report? I’m pretty shite at Twitter. Also updated my post a page behind about Belarus and Luka. Luka in Sochi today was told to calm the frick down by Vlad. Coup d’état talk is everywhere in Belarus at the moment.

Sky News just now, Lithuania foreign minister called for naval operation to open the port of Odessa and safeguard the flow of grain.

Lithuanian FM shouldn’t have said that just yet.

USA Today
Seems successes in Ukraine have emboldened our position on China/Taiwan, but also clear recognition it may require more than equipment and aid in Taiwan vs Ukraine/Russia. For right or wrong, that’s what I take from it.
ETA: As much as I despise this admin, I think this trip was a good thing to show, as the article does mention, China we’ve not lost focus on the Asian pacific. Now whether I think we should be directly, boots on the ground/boats in the water, involved for Taiwan is separate.
quote:
President Joe Biden on Monday said the United States would come to Taiwan’s defense militarily if China invades and tries to take over the self-ruled island by force.
"That's the commitment we made," Biden said during a news conference in Tokyo with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
U.S. relations with the island are governed by the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act, which outlines the U.S. commitment to help Taiwan maintain its military defense. It does not require the U.S. to intervene militarily – which Biden has ruled out doing in Ukraine.
quote:
"But that does not mean that China has the jurisdiction to go in and use force to take over Taiwan," Biden said. "It will dislocate the entire region."
That's one of the reasons why, he said, Russia must pay a "dear price" for its invasion of Ukraine. If Russia is not held accountable, Biden continued, "then what signal does that send to China about the cost of attempting, of attempting, to take Taiwan by force?"

Lukashenko better assure himself a ride out of Belarus if a coup were to go down. The Belarusian people would Kaddafi his arse if they caught him.

I agree with the letter but find myself skeptical that this is authentic. It could have been translated into English complete with flourishes and style but even the mention of the yatch lifestyle seems Western rather than Russian in viewpoint.

The military is sharply divided in Belarus with some generals family members still in prison for protesting Luka’s last election “win”. Belarus is a powder keg right now. If Luka orders Belarusian troops into Ukraine things are going to get fricky for him.

That's interesting. The author normally sends his professional correspondence to Russia in English? Or he did this time to publicly show contempt to the English speaking world?

You’re not gonna believe this but the diplomatic corps of Russia have English translators, and I’ve met a few Russians in my time that could speak the language with a fluency that some of my Cajun family can’t.

No, the resignation letter was to the Russian Ambassador and probably in Russian. The letter shown is from Boris Bondarev to his foreign colleagues. It's all over the news now and legitimate.

I thought everyone was going to give Ukraine anti-ship missiles. That would certainly back Russian ships off the coast.

Any time the WaPo says something is authentic, it makes me skeptical.

Putin saved him last time. Putin basically controls that place now. Lots of Russian agents there.

Maybe.
But three U.S. officials and two congressional sources said two types of powerful anti-ship missiles, the Harpoon made by Boeing (BA.N) and the Naval Strike Missile made by Kongsberg (KOG.OL) and Raytheon Technologies (RTX.N) were in active consideration for either direct shipment to Ukraine, or through a transfer from a European ally that has the missiles.
Two U.S. officials said the United States was working on potential solutions that included pulling a launcher off of a U.S. ship. Both missiles cost about $1.5 million per round, according to experts and industry executives.
About 20 Russian Navy vessels, including submarines, are in the Black Sea operational zone, the British defense ministry has said.
Bryan Clark, a naval expert at the Hudson Institute, said 12 to 24 anti-ship missiles like the Harpoon with ranges over 100 km would be enough to threaten Russian ships and could convince Moscow to lift the blockade. "If Putin persists, Ukraine could take out the largest Russian ships, since they have nowhere to hide in the Black Sea," Clark said.
