I think you are correct and that there will be some heavy fighting in this next phase of the war.

Also from Daily Kos:
quote:

The first of those locations is Severodonetsk in the east, where its position on the east bank of the Siverskyi Donets River isolates the city from other areas under Ukrainian control and leaves it with Russian forces pushing in from three sides. The second one is Lyman, where the city’s position on the north side of the same river leaves it isolated from other Ukrainian areas.

I think hitting the Popsana area hard makes sense for the Russians. Ukraine has the majority of its combat power to the north on the Izium to Lysychansk line.

Hit them hard where they aren't as strong. It looks like someone is finally showing some military intelligence on the Russian side.

Will Ukraine be able to bring in enough strength to hold? Guess we'll see over the next week.

It is a very active battlefield right now. You have the northern push by the Ukrainians, with the Russians starting to respond by pressuring Sumy again. Meanwhile, Ukraine is awfully close to the critical town of Vovchansk. Russia really needs to prevent Ukraine from moving on that town.

Just a bit further south, there are really spotty reports about Ukraine crossing the Donets and establishing bridgeheads at Staryi Saltiv and Rubizhne. I didn't see anything on this today so either they are keeping it hush-hush, or who knows?

On the Izium-Severodonestsk line, you have the Russians making gains around Lyman with the city now being encircled on three sides. The Ukrainians have so far prevented the Russians from crossing the Donets. Russia is staging to siege Severdonestsk and now to the south, it appears they are going to make a big push out of the Popsana area.

The tempo of the battle is increasing

Still can’t believe one of our fellow TD goofbaws was wondering if he and his family should think about leaving Lysychansk

Senior US Defense Official- "[The Russians] still have not corrected their coordination issues... Their communications are still not very efficient between commanders... [they are sticking] very closely to their doctrine of artillery fire...then a frontal attack by formations that are small, and in some cases, not fully resourced, fully manned, fully strong, and they get rebuffed by the Ukrainians. That is sort of why we're seeing all this back and forth, particularly in the Donbas region."

This is interesting due to the ramifications if it's true.

Russia said on May 18 that it is has deployed a new generation of lasers in Ukraine, which can burn up drones.

find this point of view very interesting.

I mean.. let’s say Ukraine is a US “puppet state” as so many like to put it. It still doesn’t explain why any American would cheer for Russia to win a war against America’s proxy.
Because it's an "American puppet state" as he said.

Apparently he hates his own country to the point where he hopes we fail and Russia prevails.

More evidence that the Russian's are putting more effort in the Popsana region. Note the commentary below the tweet suggesting that the map is out of date and the Russians have made further gains in that area.

Russian advances in past 24-48 hours in east Donbas as shown by

. Russian forces have pushed forward from Popasna and now sit 15km from Bakhmut, 10km from Soledar. Videos of Ru troop concentrations suggest Popasna direction is main Ru thrust currently.

It's simply because of who's in the Whitehouse. If it was Trump, they would be cheering louder than anyone for Ukraine.

Just as there would be others, some in this thread even, that would be cheering on Russia if Trump was still in office and supporting Ukraine.

It's partially Biden hate, but there's more to it than that. To some of them, Putin is a bastion of traditional values and is leading the fight against globalism and western decadence. This predates the current situation by a number of years

That's right. For awhile we were getting quite a few memes running down western militaries due to the compositions of the forces, but for some weird reason, I'm not seeing those posted much recently.

New on the ground video from the failed river crossing.

#Ukraine: Finally the first footage from the ground near the infamous failed crossing near Bilohorivka - dozens of destroyed and damaged vehicles, including Shturm-S, MT-LB, a tank and even BMP-1 with obvious Russian tactical signs.

Like that goes straight to the video

Trump to his credit and unlike Obama was aiding Ukraine by providing them with defensive weapons. He was ahead of the curve in that area.
If Trump was president now, I doubt Putin invades Ukraine. I believe he saw Biden as weak just as Obama was weak so he attacked. Biden’s reaction surprised him.

Lesson? The image you portray can make a difference.

Most of the same people would still be cheering for Russia even if Trump were President. It has more to do with their underlying views on Jews, African Americans and Hispanics than who is President IMO. Been noticing this for years.

Russia is like the zombies in a zombie movie. Mindless, uninhibited, just keep moving forward even as they get their heads shot/beaten in. That's why they won't "lose" this war, because they will never stop coming no matter how badly they are losing.
