I cleaned out an old closet yesterday, and found a Blockbuster gift card. Will use it to buy some CDs with explicit lyrics now that I'm old enough

They had a chance to buy Netflix, but instead, refused to adapt to the changing times.
I used to manage a Blockbuster. They decided to partner up with DirecTV instead (I hated selling those fricking things).
The reginal manager had a meeting with us and said "Netflix will never be as large as a retail store. People like going to their neighborhood video store to rent videos instead of dealing with a faceless internet retailer."
The kicker was when he said "Netflix is looking into internet streaming video. The technology will never be there to stream a whole movie over the internet without constant reloading and buffer pauses."
I don't know if that statement was just wishful thinking on his part.

Cognitive dissonance.

not to mention when a random dick head would also give his 2 cents on if this movie was appropriate for you. Thought you had snuck one past the D, then this a-hole comes out of no where to swat your shot

eehhh. This would have been what, late 90s or very early 2000s? I can see that being a valid mindset at that time. I know our family internet around that time couldn't watch much video without it either being short or grainy. I can see people back then being appalled at the thought of streaming a 2 hour movie straight to your TV. And the thought of HD would probably really blow their mind lol

I would love to go there. Bucket list item.

It was stupidity on blockbusters part. All the local stores knew the future. We were just mom and pops though
Was a good run though

I prefer video stores to streaming. In a video store I can scan the wall foe different movies in a minute or two. With Netflix and Amazon it's one line of scroll that goes through all manner of shite in a category at a time. In video store I could almost instantly see a movie case and be reminded that I had meant to see the movie but had forgotten. With streaming, if you've forgotten about it, you have to luck into its image appearing amongst the five or six on the screen at any one time.

My father in law was an Executive Vice President of Moovies back in the 90's. Did y'all have those in LA?

I can also recall seeing that curtained area (porn section) in the back and wondered back there and snuck in there.
At first I thought it was a back office, until I started seeing the boxes and the titles.
Of course, I was young and did not have any clue what I was looking at.

I am disappointed no one has mentioned Movie Gallery. They had a 5/5/5 deal. 5 movies for 5 nights for 5 dollars. OMGosh. Saw so many rated R movies when I was like 8.
